USD confirms it will jump to Division I sports; follows lead of SDSU

VERMILLION – University of South Dakota President James Abbott said this afternoon that the school will jump up to NCAA Division I sports.

USD has been studying whether it can afford to move from Division II to the higher league, a move that would involve boosting the school's sports budget and likely investments in new facilities.

South Dakota State University and North Dakota State recently made the move, and the University of North Dakota this year announced it would follow their lead.

USD will hold a press conference at 2:30.

That is good for the great west. Hopefully now they will stay alive with USD and UND being added. Maybe Sac State and San Diego will join in and it could get a playoff bid.

San Diego plays non-scholarship football and is unlikely to move up (for a while, a move DOWN to Division II or Division III appeared more likely. Sacramento State would need some sort of impetus to move; I just don't see what they gain by moving to the Great West for football and the Big West for other sports.

The GReat West has recently stated that they have contacted schools, and there could be an announement by January or February. Obviously San Diego has scholarship issues, but could be resolved. The GWFC, Big West combo for Sac State would save a lot on travel, and have more regional rivals. Although hopefully UCD and Sac State move to the wac.

Glad to hear that South Dakota is trying to upgrade to D-I. They'll join with North Dakota, NDSU and SDSU.
