Discuss general happenings with Sac State here, regarding the future of their conference affiliation.

Personally, I think they should move to the Big West, with football in the Great West.

Reasons for this include:
*They should take it slow with moving to 1-A if they want to do so
*Intensify rivalry with UC Davis
*They are currently the only division 1 school in the CSU system that neither plays 1-A football nor are a member of the Big West.
*They play against more California schools. No other Big Sky member is in CA (though CS-Northridge was a member when they had football)

It wouldn't necessarily be a bad fit, but they have to be scared that the Great West collapses, and then WHAT DO THEY DO WITH THEIR FOOTBALL PROGRAM ?

Say they go to the Big West / Great West ?

Then the Great West has 6 football schools...

The Big Sky invites Southern Utah, and suddenly the Great West is down to 5. The Great West eventually needs 6 to have an Automatic Qualifier (AQ) into the FCS Playoffs.
The Great West is just plain UNSTABLE, since all the teams in it want to be elsewhere ultimately. The Dakota Schools coming in (North Dakota, South Dakota) probably ultimately want to follw NDSU and SDSU into the Gateway.

THE OTHER POSSIBILITY would involve Sacramento State upgrading to FBS football and moving to the WAC. The WAC would take them in a heartbeat, since htey are a bit unstable at 9 (with La Tech continually probing for an invitation to move to a conference in the SouthEast (C-USA would be their hope)).

Portland State has also made some noise about joining the WAC, so I think it would behoove both Portland and Sacramento to upgrade:

WAC:
Boise State
Idaho
Fresno State
Hawaii
Nevada
New Mexico State
Portland State (from Big Sky)
Sacramento State (from Big Sky)
San Jose State
Utah State

Big Sky:
Eastern Washington
Idaho State
Montana
Montana State
Northern Arizona
Northern Colorado
Southern Utah (from Summit League/Great West Football)
Weber State

Big West
Cal Davis (Big Sky affiliate for Football)
Cal Irvine
Cal Poly (Big Sky affiliate for Football)
Cal Riverside
Cal Santa Barbara
Cal State Fullerton
Cal State Long Beach
Cal State Northridge
Pacific

Louisiana Tech is presumed to have a more geographically sound home. The Big Sky could also pick up North Dakota and South Dakota as Football affiliates, giving them 12 schools for football, if the Gateway turns them down:

North - Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, North Dakota, South Dakota
South - Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Weber State, Northern Colorado, Cal Poly, Cal Davis

The fate of Western FCS football, ironically, may again be in the hands of the Summit League. If the Summit admits North Dakota and South Dakota, six of their own schools will be playing football (Western Illinois, North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Southern Utah) . . . if Western Illinois lets it happen.

And then there's also the chance of several other schools from the west moving up from D2 to D1-AA. The Great West would be their first stop. If Humboldt State goes D1 and joins the Big West, then they would have nowhere else to go for FB other than the Great West.

Another possibility is University of San Diego (FCS, non-scholarship FB, Pioneer League).

The Great West has been urging them to add scholarships and come aboard.

With Southern Utah and the Dakota U's wanting to ultimately be Gateway / Big Sky, the only real way for the Great West to stabilize is to gain critical mass of 6 west coast schools. To get there, you are correct, you'd have to have a few move-ups from D-II.

The Big West/Great West is a nice safe home for Sac State, but not an ideal home. The WAC would be great for Sac State and Sac State great for the WAC, but I doubt the WAC office sees the path to make this happen.

Very Sad.
