Big West realignment

According to the Twitter feed of the UCSD student newspaper The Guardian, the Division I student fee referendum was defeated tonight by a total of 4673 'for' votes to 6470 'against' votes.

What we can glean from this:

1. UCSD will not be joining D-I and not joining the Big West for the foreseeable future.
2. Their student body is not overwhelmingly clamoring for a big-time college sports culture.

From this point forward I can only see the BW growing if Nevada-Reno, UNLV, Fresno, or San Jose St. have a change in their football situation. Personally I'd love to take all four, and have a 15-team conference with 14 in-conf basketball games and everybody visits Hawaii only once every two years.

Yeah, that Davis/Hawaii road trip is a little tough on the legs.

Several previous commenters mentioned that 11 was actually kind of ideal, because of the unique situation with Hawaii and the impossibility of them having a good travel partner.

I am rooting for San Jose State to eventually house its Olympic sports in this conference and play football in the MWC. It would save SJSU lots of money in travel, and it would give UC Davis a Northern California travel partner that it no longer has with Pacific leaving.

Or Sacramento State with the exact same logic (and Sac State being allowed to be football-only in the Big Sky, as SLO and UC Davis do).

SJSU is either all in the MWC/CUSA or all out. The only way SJSU goes to the BW is if they are left out of the MWC/CUSA thing and the WAC drops football. Then they would be fb Indy and BW other sports.

Yeah, but that's with UC Davis and Pacific as nice logical northern travel partners. Having Hawaii as a travel partner with a LA-area school doesn't really work. UC Davis and Hawaii would work, because Sacramento has direct flights to Honolulu multiple times daily. You make it a three-flight trip for LA schools, everything else is bus.

San Diego State and Hawaii could work, but busing to SD from LA and flying to Hawaii and back is a little more complex/pricey.

Big West Conference commissioner Dennis Farrell said, "We told Hawaii they were only obligated to pay (subsidies for) those schools that were in the conference at the time they were brought in."

San Diego State will join the Big West in sports other than football in 2013 and there is speculation that Boise State is renewing a push for membership of its nonfootball sports. The Broncos were rebuffed last year after trying to gain entry as a package deal with San Diego State.

Farrell declined comment on a Boise State bid, saying, "If I had any conversation, (with Boise State) it should probably be private."

What — if any — membership changes the conference makes will not impose additional subsidy burdens on UH, Farrell said.
"It would be a little unfair if, all of a sudden, we brought in another eight schools or something that would force Hawaii to pay travel allowances for those schools," Farrell said. "We just didn't think that was fair."
Farrell said "San Diego State was aware of that when we brought them in."

The Big West Board of Directors is scheduled to meet next week, when membership could be voted upon.

If Boise State is brought in to the Big West, they should have to pay a travel subsidy too.

What is the Big West's incentive to bring in Boise State?

1. Unlike Hawaii, it is a completely unappealing road trip. (Recruits would be pumped to take an annual/biannual trip to Hawaii; no recruit is pumped about the trip to Boise).

2. Their Olympic sports aren't good, so they do nothing to aid the Big West's "Q rating".

3. Related to #1 - it's completely outside of the Big West's geographic footprint, making it an expensive road trip for every Big West school, at a time when California public schools are in dire financial straits and athletic department budgets are being slashed.

4. It's another mouth to feed.

Boise State needs the Big West a heck of a lot more than the Big West needs Boise State. Given that leverage, I think Boise State should basically have to "buy in" to this conference via an entry fee or significant travel subsidies to every team in the conference.

Here's how unappealing Boise State athletics (sans football) are to me: I think you could make a better argument for Sac State being Team #11 in the Big West than Boise State.

At least Sac State would give UC Davis the travel partner they lost with Pacific's departure. Davis and Sac State are less than a 30 minute drive apart, and that would allow teams to make their bus trip north and play two games in a weekend (Thursday/Saturday), instead of the long, awkward drive up north for one game with a quick turnaround for a Saturday game down south.
