Hmm....

Metro-State (Colorado) would need to merge with Colorado-Denver first, and then would be a better candidate for the Big Sky. (Besides, Denver already has the Great West's conference presence there.) Nebraska-Omaha would work better as a way to connect the conference's footprint together.

New Jersey Tech, once their sports programs are established, would make an excellent rival for Rutgers, for much the same reason Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate works.

Kentucky State is a little too far west to work in the MEAC. I would say either the OVC (with it's reasonably small footprint and fellow Kentucky schools Morehead, Murray, and EKU), or the SWAC (with its sem-recognisable footprint).

Delta State is an HBCU. They would work better in the SWAC.

Any two of UMSL, UNA, UAH, and NKU would work in the Ohio Valley, or NKU and UMSL could go into the Summit (football in the Missouri Valley) and UNL and UAH could go into the Southern or Atlantic Sun.

Southland would then be a 16 team conference.

How about 17? Incarnate Word of Texas announced their intentions to go 1AA and mentioned they would like to join the Southland conference.

Too big... Texas st has mentioned leaving the Southland.

I think a southland schism would be in the cards by 2015. C. Oklahoma and Arkansas Tech would be sensible replacment candidates for the Southland as would UIW, but I cannot see UTPA due to no football and the travel costs they'd bring.

UTPA is a school that should get their act together. Their athletic department's only shot at real long term fiscal viabilty is to become part of a trio with UTSA and Texas State. Rebrand them as "The University of South Texas", "The University of Central Texas", and Texas State. That is a combined 60K grads each year in a massive untapped TV region. THAT will make athletic programs self reliant.

If UTPA's president and AD sold their students on implimenting a $20 athletic fee (or even a $10 one) they would likely have a relatively easy path into a long term affiliation with UTSA and Texas State. Heck, they could even start football. Right now, they are just slowly bleeding their university.
