How stupid is this ?

Destroy the conference round robin for a miniscule chance of getting more teams in....

If they have an RPI problem, there are two non-convoluted things they can do to improve their lot...

1) Get the lesser teams in the WCC to upgrade their teams so they can WIN OOC games.
Some of those teams have a shoe-string budget and play in "high school gyms"... INVEST ! Or drop to D-II, D-III !

2) Each team ALREADY had 10 or more OOC games to schedule.
Schedule some decent opponents for THOSE games, who do not have abysmal RPIs in the 250-330 range.

Ok, here's why it's not stupid...

The double-round robin is fair. But who needs fairness when only two leagues that matter have a double-round robin of fairness?
By dumping the DRR* the WCC can strategically:
- give Gonzaga and everyone else two more OOC opportunities.
- give Gonzaga one less RPI anchor game
- give the 3rd or 4th place team one less loss at the hand of Gonzaga.
- Save some dough if you slice a faraway game off the DRR

Secondly, all conference games you're guaranteed to go .500 in as a league. So you play less conference games, and now your RPI is more dependent on whom you play OOC.

Also, for everyone else in the WCC, they don't want them to schedule tougher OOC games. They want the bottom seven of the WCC to schedule AS EASY AS POSSIBLE OOC so they ACTUALLY WIN SOME GAMES. Winning OOC is what makes everyone's RPI go up.

So when Gonzaga, SMC and BYU play a Pepperdine team that's 4-12 WCC, they're 14-16 overall instead of 9-21.

Oh, forgot my DRR*

* - I think the REAL REASON for the “We’re going to 16” announcement is to give everyone a headstart on scheduling OOC games the last weekend in December.

They want all nine teams to be ready with games booked for WHEN (not if) Gonzaga leaves.

The conference office can make two 16-game WCC schedules (One with Gonzaga, and one without Gonzaga) and everyone can have their OOC ready to go when the decision comes in.

Well, it sure SEEMS like Gonzaga already has one foot out the door.

I think this entire RPI think is a bit convoluted, and the recent WCC stuff sounds like an act of desperation....
(groveling at the feet of "famed ESPN bracketologist" (is that what he lists on Form 1040 under "occupation" ?) Joe Lunardi).

WCC needs a paid consultant to tell them that (other than GU and St. Mary's) they stink...

I assume GU will go to MWC (try for 2018-19), and Seattle will be brought on board as quickly as they can exit the WAC without ridiculous ext fees.
If WCC has to play 2018-19 with only 9 teams, then your theory on the 16-game season (next year it might be a 9-team round robin) may be correct.

Is the Deseret News a mouth-piece for BYU (hoping that none of this movement occurs) ?

A mouthpiece for the Church and, by association, BYU. Absolutely.

However, it appears Gonzaga succeeded in "big-timing" WCC schools.
