With the Big Sky expanding to 14 for football, I think it opens up more room for the CAA to consider something similar. In theory, they had already approved it when they had NU and Hofstra, but still planned on bringing in ODU and GA St.

So if URI and Villanova leave, it still opens up some good options.

Maine
UNH
UMass
* Fordham
* Stony Brook
Delaware
Towson
JMU
Richmond
W&M
ODU
* Charlotte
GA State

Also have a potential albany upgrade to get to 14.

Quinn pointed out the obvious expansion candidates:

Fordham (wanted out of the Patriot)
Stony Brook (in Big South as a stop-gap measure, I assume they would jump at a CAA invitation)
Albany (NEC - maybe budget constraints cause them to prefer 40 (NEC) vs. 63 (CAA) schollies...)
Charlotte (may eventually seek FBS, but CAA is a great FCS fit for the time being).

I'll throw out another one.... Youngstown State.
They may be happy in MVFC, but they are in NE Ohio (far extreme end of the MVFC and the only non-MVC / non-Summit member).... would travel be roughly comparable in the CAA ?

CAA FB teams are leaving / dropping like flies, it wouldn't hurt to go into expansion planning again SOON !

Perhaps, but they have ODU and GA St. joining. So they have 9 members, ideal for scheduling an 8 game season.

If they wanted a 10th and have 9 conference games, then those schools you mentioned are all good. I think Charlotte might top the list though, followed by Fordham and Stonybrook with Albany at the bottom.

UNC Charlotte would even make a nice all-sports CAA member.

But from a football perspective, Maine, UNH, and UMass are football-only members, and if they feel too isolated, they could call up those 3 NY schools (Stony Brook, Albany, Fordham) and Central CT and enter discussions about reforming a Yankee Conference for FB (under the management of ???).

The relevant question regarding the CAA's need to expand is "how happy are Maine, UNH, and UMass, and what available alternatives do they realistically have ?"

Any idea what this is all about ?

http://twitter.com/CAASports/status/9392954187718657#

"Big Announcement from CAA HQ tomorrrow (today actually Tuesday, November 30, 2010)"....

One "tease" I saw said this will have nothing to do with football....

Tute79,thanks for the post.
Doesn't appear that today's CAA announcement was about UMass FB.First,the above mentioned Boston Herald article does not point to any imminent announcement.Also,why would a MAC expansion announcement originate from CAA headquarters?
Here are FCS MB threads discussing "mystery CAA announcement" which apparently involved the notice of sale of BB tix.Links at http://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthr ... nouncement
and at http://www.championshipsubdivision.com/ ... =4&t=20482

Does this show that "expansion fever" is alive and well at all college levels?
