With the Big South needing more members to stay aflot and with the improvement that LRU has made in DIV 2 heading to the national championship, do you think Big South will offer an invite to LRU. LRU is in NC and fits the private small university type that most of the Big South school are.

It might happen. Who knows? But only time will tell between the conference and the school.

Benson's coming for a visit...that's serious enough. The fact that CCU's running a budget that parallels other SBC programs is so clutch for them. It really only makes the venue modifications the next big part of any move.

I still wonder if Benson didn't call out these two programs who are in need of some work to force out JMU, but maybe it's time to put that to rest. I do think both candidates might see some resistance from former CAA and SoCon members, most especially Coastal because they were reaching higher even when the likes of Appy, GeoSo, and GSU were FCS. Were those guys cool with the 'Cleers back then?

Where will the Big South look when replacements for Liberty and CCU are needed?

Anyone else from NEC feeling constricted? Anyone from MEAC got the stuff to actually move?

The pickings are slim.

If schools start leaving the Big South then the football schools left behind are going to be left in a pickle. The Big South is a hybrid league and the as the nonfootball schools become the majority the league's commitment is going to wane more and more. Winthrop, UNC-Ashville, Campbell, High Point, Radford, and Longwood have no interest in football or expanding the footprint. They might become a band of independents unless they can sway some DII schools to move up and poach Kennesaw St as a full member. It's doubtful, but the SoCon might be willing to accept a couple charity cases if Big South football collapses.

If the Big South loses Coastal and drops to 10 full members then the football schools are in some serious trouble. That would just leave Liberty, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, and Charleston Southern as full members and Kennesaw St and distant Monmouth as affiliates. The 6 non-football schools could essentially block all expansion and hold. I can't imagine that the SoCon would decide to be generous and offer some of these schools full membership of football affiliate deals.

As long as the SoCon has 9 football members, I can't imagine them being in the mood to expand. If they wanted to go to 12 members I could see them adding non-football schools like Lipscomb and UNC-Asheville:

West - Lipscomb, Samford, Chattanooga, ETSU, UNC Asheville, Western Carolina
East - Furman, Wofford, The Citadel, VMI, Elon, UNC Greensboro

Asheville is effectively the center of the conference, and every school in the SoCon (especially the private schools) should enjoy the increased exposure in Nashville.

The Atlantic Sun then has to figure out if it can lure Delaware State from the MEAC, and possibly another school as well if the OVC loses Eastern Kentucky to FBS.

Perhaps it's time for the Atlantic Sun to end Big South football:

(*no football, **football only)
North:
NJIT*/Monmouth**
Delaware State
Indiana, PA
West Chester, PA
Lipscomb*
MEAC School

South:
Kennesaw State
USC Upstate*/Presbyterian**
FGCU*/Charleston Southern**
Stetson*/Gardner-Webb**
North Florida*/Liberty**
Jacksonville*

That puts the Atlantic Sun at a 10/12 alignment.

Big South Football (FCS) will be down to 4 Big South schools, one ASun FB affiliate (Kennesaw St.), and a northern affilate (Monmouth) for the FCS conf. minimum of 6.

Monmouth would obviously rather be in a northern FB conference, and their presence in the Big South FB League is a temporary marriage of convenience.

However, I think likely new candiates are the 3 schools in Big South (Campbell) and ASun (Stetson, Jacksonville) who currently play FB in the non-schooly Pioneer League.
See if any pressure is applied for those 3 to upgrade to full FCS....
(it will have an effect on their other sports, as adding 40-63 FB scholarships will mean having to up women's athletic scholarships and / or decrease other men's scholarships by a corresponding amount.

Is six the minimum for FCS playoff autobid, or is it seven? I think six can make the conference in certain sports, but football was different? If there isn't panic out of Big South about this, I guess they're safe with this loss, although you'd want more teams for scheduling assurances and security and whatnot.
