No doubt Lindenwood is very well funded. A year or two ago, they were talking about buying the Family Arena from the City of St. Charles to house their hockey team (and I suppose other indoor sports). Not sure what happened with that, but they continue to build brand new facilities on their campus.

So who is pushing UMSL to move up to D-1 ? Where are they going to get the money (I'm not aware of any wealthy boosters that are terribly active)... Then there's the question of what conference to join... OVC, MVC, Horizon, Summit ?

I know UCSD has their hearts set on the Big West (so does Cal St. - Bakersfield), but if the main objective is to get to D-1, the WAC would take them in a heartbeat !
Might be a decent interim option....

...but it would be a budget killer. The travel expenses in the WAC would be insane, with pretty much no TV money coming in to the schools. Flights to Seattle, Edinburg, Texas (is there even a decent airport there?) and Chicago would be crazy expensive for the Olympic sports. Meanwhile, 7 of the Big West schools are in southern California. 4 Big West schools are less than 100 miles from San Diego.

Agreed - and the D-i move is apparently contingent on going to ONLY the Big West.

However, the article mentions the 6 year delay in eligibility in D-1, and an immediate move to ANY D-1 conference could start that process (if they figured that a Big West invitation would eventually come along).

Doesn't it become more manageable with Chicago State most likely leaving and UMKC publicly stating it wants to leave? While the travel is still worse than the Big West it's better then it was. UC San Diego could market themselves with Cap State Bakersfield as dual expansion candidates.

Not sure what is going on with Chicago State.

Apparently UMKC is regretting their ill-advised move, and a would welcome an invitation to the MVC or back to the Summit.

If somehow UMKC gets swept up in the Wichita State realignment cascade, the WAC may look at their situation, realize they need more numbers for the long haul,
realize that their core is out west, and go ahead and approach UCSD about becoming their Plan B.
