Hey all. Helping out a friend again with some research.

Does anyone know over the past 20-25 years, any schools that have downgraded from Division 1 to Division 2?

Can't think of any off the top of my head. Any help would be great! Thanks!

back in the early 90's St.John's(NY) was D-III in football so was Dayton(D-III power). The NCAA made the D-I schools move up to D-I or drop football. That's why the FCS has the pioneer league. Widener was never D-I.

Gulf South is D-II, the Arkansas Members were from the NAIA.

Widener was never a D-I member. I don't see how they were allowed to be a D-I fb affiliate since it wasn't/isn't allowed, thus all of the D-I members playing D-II, D-III football had to move to D-I for all sports. If you have a link or something that would show different, that would work.

UC Davis was D-II until 2003 when they started the move to D-I

Portland State was 1-AA when that designation first appeared, but dropped down to D-2 (and dropped MEN'S basketball) in 1981 IIRC.

They went up, and to the Big Sky, in 1995 or 1996.

I thought Winston-Salem was never a "full" D-I member...they stopped in the middle of the transition...

You're right, they never made it to full D-I, not sure they should count in this table.

Does anyone know what exactly was the reasoning behind Augusta State moving down to D-II? They were a founding member of the Big South, I believe, and were in the league briefly before moving back(?) down.

I read something recently about them possibly merging with another school in the area and possibly moving back up to the D-I level. It may be nothing more than a rumor though. We shall see.

Adelphi is moving it's men's soccer program to Division II and the Northeast 10 Conference (Adelphi's all-sports home) in 2013 per Wikipedia. It was previously a member of the Atlantic Soccer Conference until the conference dissolved in 2011. Adelphi competed in 2012 as a Division I independent.

University of Baltimore dropped sports in '83.
