With the NBA changing how the top-8 of each conference will be seeded for the playoffs, I thought about another idea. The Western Conference has pretty much dominated the league for many years. Why not do a MLB/NFL American/National Conference approach? While the NBA, NHL, and MLS still hold the Western/Eastern Conference alignment, the NBA has the money to make the traveling not a problem. Split the league into 2 15-team conferences with 3 divisions of 5 (West, South, North). Split nearby rivals to different conferences (LA Lakers/LA Clippers, NY Knicks/Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat/Orlando Magic, etc.).
OR (to maintain regional rivalries)
The NBA could split the league into 5 6-team divisions, forgo conferences, and just have the top 16 teams make the playoffs. 1 v 16, 2 v 15, etc.
