With the talk of a future European division, there would certianly be a need for some new alignment. Here's something I'll throw out there.

Major shifts:
- Split into 4 division alignment per conference
- 4 Eastern teams would shift to the Western Conference

Positives:
Better geographic setup for virtually all the teams
Shift of Minn. back to a division with southern neighbors Milwaukee

Negatives:
loss of history with shift of 4 teams from East to West
(1) odd division with Det-Clev-Phi-Wash

EAST:
EUROPE:
Madrid
London
Moscow
Berlin
Cologne

NORTHEAST:
Toronto
Boston
New york
New Jersey

CENTRAL:
Philadelphia
Washington
Cleveland
Detroit

SOUTH:
Atlanta
Miami
Orlando
Charlotte

WEST:

MIDWEST:
Minnesota
Milwaukee
Chicago
Indiana

SOUTHWEST:
Dallas
Houston
San Antonio
New Orleans/OK City
Memphis

NORTHWEST:
Denver
Portland
Seattle
Utah

PACIFIC:
Golden state
LA Clippers
LA Lakers
Sacramento
Phoenix

May I offer to be the bucket of water to your Wicked Witch of the West? :D

The NBA is used to getting cash for expansion. When dealing with European sports authorities with their own agendas, the cash would have to fly the other way, and the NBA won't tolerate that. Cities will also politely ask the NBA to stick it where the sun doesn't shine if the NBA dares ask cities to pony up some bucks for arenas.

The question I find myself asking is a bit of the reverse happening... not in terms of alignments, but of structures. European players no longer have to go to American colleges to get NBA notice. The youth and reserve programs Euro teams run (they mimic the model soccer clubs use), at least by my notice, tear up any semblance of the American system. Eventually, will the NBA have to bypass college and actually develop their own talent?

It'd make more sense for the NBA to go to 36 teams instead of 35-6 divisions of 6, and an even number of European teams for scheduling purposes.

EASTERN CONFERENCE
Europe - Madrid, London, Berlin, Cologne, Moscow, Athens
Atlantic - Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, Orlando, Philadelphia, Washington
Northeast - Cleveland, Detroit, Toronto, New York, New Jersey, Boston

WESTERN CONFERENCE
Midwest - Chicago, Indiana, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New Orleans, Memphis
Pacific - Portland, Utah, LA Lakers, LA Clippers, Sacramento, Golden State
Southwest - Denver, Phoenix, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Oklahoma City
