Las Vegas has a new arena near the Strip and a crazy old coot ready to fill it with an NHL team. It looks like that's going to happen tomorrow in a vote during an excessive heat advisory.
The smart part of this, in reality, is as long as the odds are somewhat against the Raiders moving to Las Vegas, the NHL can have the market to themselves. That's how Vegas would get value out of it.
As much as I joke about the weather, I don't think that's the concern. Vegas should do good business because the market has grown to the point that, not only can it handle this, they sold over 12,000 deposits for this LAST YEAR. The NFL potentially encroaching is a concern. Whatever the arrangement Bill Foley has with an arena that's not in his control; that's what intrigues me the most. On its face, that looks like an awkward arrangement with MGM's people. This is not a publicly owned or financed building.
