The purpose for the moderators is much more basic than you might think: to protect the forums from spammers.
A couple years back we had a big spam problem as we had an open posting platform in which any visitor could post. This led to not just improper anonymous attack posts but a ton of spam from SEO individuals as well as spam-bots. So we made the switch to a sign-in system. That switch did lower the overall posting on the site.
But what it did was improve the quality.
Before the migration to the new site, there were only 3 moderators. Now there are a few more.
The tasks remain the same for moderators on the new forum compared to moderators on the old forum: 1) As frequent site users, they have the ability to remove spam (think of all the Escort links that were showing up) 2) Serve as ambassadors for Collegesportsinfo.com when on other sites, trying to bring other good people to this site.
I hope that everyone serves as an ambassador for this site as we need more quality posters.
Posters do not have to worry about a moderator deleting or changing their posts. That is not what they are here for and that includes me. If you see something happen, let me know. The moderators are here just to save a board from spam hijacks. There will be some times when a new topic posted in a forum is more appropriate for an existing topic (example would be a Utah to Pac-10 topic in a Big East forum). And at times I or someone else might move that topic to the appropriate thread.
If anyone EVER has a problem with a moderator or doesn't feel comfortable, just send me a PM or an email and I'll take care of it. It's that simple. If it were ever a global problem, I'd just change the moderator status' to All-star and risk the spam problem returning. But we all suffer if that happens.
