I would say Northern Virginia. Any thoughts

There was a USAToday article that I read within the last month, where they rank the top 6 city/metro markets for the new home of the Expos. I think these were their rankings:

1. Northern Virginia
2. Washington, DC (proper)
3. Las Vegas (reflects that rapid growth and growth of sports markets in the west)
4. Norforlk/Virginia Beach/Newport News/Hampton Roads, VA (the largest current metro area without a pro sports team -- of the top 4 pro sports leagues)
5. Monterey, Mexico (market with high income average for Mexico, could become a Mexican National Team like the Toronto Blue Jays is for Canada)
6. Portland, OR (the largest metro area in the US without a MLB team).

If they chose "Northern Virginia", that would be too "directional" of a name, and it doesn't serve their whole potential fan base. "Washington" doesn't seem
like an appropriate name either, as the city proper is competing with this intra-metro market, and the market is bigger than just DC, as they are in Virginia. "Virginia" doesn't seem right either, as it wouldn't sound inclusive of DC, and fans in Maryland as well as potentially in West Virginia.

Here are a couple of ideas for names for a Northern Virginia MLB Team:

"Potomac" Expos -- refering to the river that borders Virginia, Maryland, and DC

or

"Chessapeake" Expos -- referring to the Chessapeake Bay between Virginia and Maryland.

I prefer the "Potomac" Expos the best.

fbg, the latest I heard on the Expos is that MLB is going to put off that issue again. Do not expect to see the Expos as a topic at the MLB owners meeting later this month.

As it stands, a decision is due before the end of the MLB year, though, so as to provide time for the new community to prepare for hosting the team, and to allow the team to relocate players, offices, etc.

Last check was DC had the better package offer for the team (Free stadium, anyone?!) but No. Va. offered a larger facility in a nicer part o' town and was that also slightly further away from Baltimore. I hate to see it put this way, but it sounds as if the semantics of avoiding a DC or Washington name for the relocated team might help assuage Mr. Vader's Angelos' misplaced fear about how this franchise would hurt his Orioles.

Old Vader Angelos is the only one not wanting it there. What a A-Hole he is.
