It sure seems like the NFL is the top dog, as far as providing the audience for blue chip advertisers who want to reach all the desirable demographics. So I would think that if a few NFL sponsors have fallen on hard times, a few of their competitiors might be waiting in the wings to pick up the sponsorship, although maybe at a somewhat lesser fee.
Still the NFL just cut their office staff by 10 %, so they must be bracing for some impact in the way of lower revenues.
Before this receession hit, the NFL backed out of their option to extend the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Players NFLPA. This should be interesting. I had thought the current CBA worked well for both parities, and that the player's cut is rest up or down based on league revenues. It seems like the owners may want to take advantage of the departure of Gene Upshaw and try to adjust the percentages in their favor. Not sure if this doesn't result in some unintended consequences for both parties.
There is just too much greed among the NFL owners: Build me a new stadium, or we move ! Subscribe to the NFL Network... it's a great value, the games that were on free TV are now on some stupid cable TV network that nobody had a need for. Screw the fans, let's go for more revenue ! And now what happens with an un-capped season ? Why would the owners want to un-cap their spending excesses ?
