Raiders sign Jeff Garcia as their backup quarterback
By Steve Corkran
Who says you can't go home again? On Monday, Jeff Garcia returned to his Bay Area roots by signing with the Raiders.
Garcia, 39, signed a one-year contract and is expected to compete with Andrew Walter and Bruce Gradkowski for two backup quarterback spots.
The move comes as a bit of surprise, given Garcia is accustomed to being a starter and won't be given that chance as long as third-year player JaMarcus Russell is healthy and playing well.
The Raiders are committed to Russell as their unquestioned starter and into him for $32 million guaranteed. Garcia arrives knowing his primary role is as a mentor to Russell and someone who can accelerate his maturation into a top-flight player.http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_12082745
