Okay, 'univ name changes'

I like your idea, but I would add these changes:

CALIFORNIA

Cal State-Fresno, becomes a doctorate extensive university and becomes the flagship of the Cal State system and has a substantial research function, and has a law school. It can then assume the moniker "California State University", or "Cal State" and drop Fresno from their name and/or be referred to in the same way "Berkeley" is to the UC system.

COLORADO

Mesa State College become the University of Colorado at Grand Junction.

KANSAS

Wichita State becomes KU-Wichita
Emporia State, becomes KU-Emporia
Ft Hays State, becomes KSU-Hays
Pittsburg State becomes KSU-Pittsburg
KSU-Salina already exists

(this way no schisms are created in the Great Sunflower State)

NORTH DAKOTA

UND adds thingyinson State, Bismarck State, Valley City State as UND branches and Minot State and Mayville State become branches of NDSU. There's also a Forestry School located in Bontineau that would become a part of NDSU.

This plan would help heal a schism in the Great State of North Dakota.

OKLAHOMA

OU has a branch campus in Tulsa.

They will add East Central Oklahoma, NW Oklahoma, and SE Oklahoma to the OU system.

Meanwhile the Oklahoma State University system would add NE Oklahoma, SW Oklahoma, Central Oklahoma and Panhandle State to the OSU system.

This plan will help prevent any unhealthy schisms from occuring in the state's educational system.

SOUTH DAKOTA

There's USDSU in Sioux Falls which is a fine example of preventing a schism in the state. Its a cooperative effort between the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University and Dakota State University. It sounds a little like IUPUI in Indy and IPFW in Ft. Wayne where the state's two flagships come together and offer college curricullum to the state's largest metro area. Maybe they'll have USDSU in Rapid City someday.

To further prevent a schism, these following schools become a part of USD:

Northern State
South Dakota School of Mines becomes South Dakota Tech of the University of South Dakota

and SDSU picks up these schools into their system:

Dakota State
Black Hills State

I know, just forgot to change it. Anyways, in the long run, all public colleges/universities should join with Mizzou, and each campus would be called the University of Missouri at "something"

Alabama:

Tuskeegee Institute (The Smallest Private Land Grant School Left) joins either the Alabama A&M or Auburn Systems.

Montevallo should become Auburn-Montevallo

Conneticut:

The Conn State system should stay intependant from UConn and merge. Central Conn. should be the main campus.

DC: U of D.C. Merges with American, Howard, Georgetown, and George Washington (And possiblu Guallidet).

Florida:

Florida International should become Florida State-Miami

The Three Florida Atlantic Campuses should become UF Daytona Beach, UF-Boca Raton, and UF Melbourne(with Florida Tech UF Melbourne's School of Applied Science and Technology)

Florida Gulf Coast Becomes UF-Fort Meyers

South Florida-St. Petersburg becomes FSU St.- Petersburg

South Florida-Lakeland merges with Lakeland Community College to become UF-Lakeland

South Florida-Sarasota becomes a Community College

Georgia:

Southern Polytechnic State University Becomes Georgia Tech-Marietta

Arthur Armstrong State University becomes Georgia Tech-Savannah

Spellman, Emory and Moorhouse merge with Georgia State University

Mercer and Macon State Merge as a Campus of Georgia State

Georgia State College and University becomes Georgia State-Milligeville

Albany State Becomes Georgia State-Albany

West Georgia becomes Georgia State-Carrolton

Shorter College becomes UGa-Rome

Augusta State University becomes UGa-Augusta

Valdosta State bacomes UGa-Valdosta

Savannah State Becomes UGa-Savanna

Columbus State Becomes UGa-Columbus

Lagrange College becomes UGa-Lagrange

Georgia Southern, Georgia Southwestern State, Clayton State, Fort Valley State and Decatur State form the Gerogia A&M University System. (Main Campus Either GAMU-Fort Valley or GAMU-Stateboro)

Indiana:

Evansville becomes IUPU-Evansville

Southern Indiana Becomes Indiana State-Evansville

Ball State becomes Purdue-Muncie

Illinois:

Chicago State becomes Illinois State-Chicago

Kentucky:

Kentucky State expands it's Aquaculture functions, takes over King's Daughter's Hospital to add a medical program, and starts a law and public affairs school to become a true second flagship.

Morehead State Becomes Kentucky State-Morehead

Murray State becomes Kentucky State-Murray

North Carolina

I think that NC-A&T Should be NC State-Greensboro. (And Should have a big sports rivalry with UNC Greensboro)

Maryland:

The Four Historically Black Baltimore State Universities (Morgan State, Coppin State, Towson State and Bowie State) Should be merged (possibly with Maryland-Eastern Shore) to form Maryland State University.

Texas:

Midwestern State Becomes UT-Nacogoches

North Texas Becomes Texas A&M-Denton

Texas Southern Either Merges with Houston or becomes UT-Houston

Utah:

Dixie State Becomes UU-Dixie

Virginia is problematic.

Richmond should be UV-Richmond.

Virginia State should be Virginia Tech-Troy

Old Dominion, Newport News Apprentice, Norfolk State, and Christopher Newport Are all in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Hamption area, but each has a different function.

If I had to decide:

Old Dominion and Norfolk State become UV-Norfolk and Christopher Newport and Newport News Apprentice become Virginia Tech-Newport News

Note that these would occur in the long run

The only ones that seem logical to me from the above would be schools looking to capitalize on the branding advantages to a change, such as the recent change by SWM State to Missouri St. or SW Texas St to Texas State :

Central Conn. St. to Connecticut State University

Perhaps worth considering...

Nebraska - Omaha to Nebraska St.
UMass-Lowell to Massachusetts St.
SUNY-Albany to New York St.
U Maryland-Eastern Shore to Maryland St.

and throwing tradition aside,

Rutgers to University of New Jersey

Yeah that would be like mixing oil with water.

Univ name changes: I have no doubt some schools could change their names to something that sounds better. As you know, even mascots are under scrutiny.

Names of state universities and colleges are not governed everywhere by one master university nor necessarily, per state, under the auspices of one governing body.

For example, in Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania State University, is state-related, not state owned and operated. It is technically private with Commonwealth representation on their Board of Trustees. Yes, they do receive huge subsidy from the Commonwealth and have a network of branch campuses. Other state-related universities in Pennsylvania are Temple, Pittsburgh, and Lincoln, historically and predominantly an African-American institution.

In the 1980s, the 14 owned and operated state colleges and university in Pennsylvania moved from being operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and a separate State agency was created: The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Penn State is NOT a part of that organization.

The State Universities in Pennsylvania are as follows: Bloomsburg, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Indiana University of PA, California Univ. of PA, Edinboro, West Chester, Clarion, Millersville, E. Stroudsburg, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock, and Cheney (historically African American). Athletically, these schools are Div. II, organized into the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference, and may have a men's sport and women's sport, per campus, playing one sport up one division, and playing one sport down one division. For example, one campus plays Div. 1 men's wrestling, but plays Div. III women's field hockey.

Appropriations to State-related campuses and those that are state owned are separately made. Pennsylvania also has historically subsidized private higher education in the Commonwealth as well.

In Georgia, there is the University System of Georgia. There is one governing body; however, a campus such as Georgia Southern is not a branch unit of the University of Georgia. It is one distinct campus. Similar comparisons can be made in Mississippi and host of other states.

Names suggest organizational, governing, and political structures. It is not logical to identify a campus the University of (state) at (city) if organizationally such is governmentally incorrect.

Midwestern State Becomes UT-Nacogoches

North Texas Becomes Texas A&M-Denton

Texas Southern Either Merges with Houston or becomes UT-Houston

Utah:

Dixie State Becomes UU-Dixie

Virginia is problematic.

Richmond should be UV-Richmond.

Virginia State should be Virginia Tech-Troy

Old Dominion, Newport News Apprentice, Norfolk State, and Christopher Newport Are all in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Hamption area, but each has a different function.

If I had to decide:

Old Dominion and Norfolk State become UV-Norfolk and Christopher Newport and Newport News Apprentice become Virginia Tech-Newport News

Better tell the Southern Baptists in Georgia you're making Mercer a state institution.

Then why is there a place for posting resumes to apply for staff positions there on a Georgia governmet website?

Mercer is a religious affiliated (private-GA Baptist Convention) institution. I don't know why they have staff positions posted on the Ga Gov't website unless they are contracted in some manner. Their main campus is in Macon and they developed a branch campus near Atlanta many years ago.

Emory, Shorter, Spelman, Morris Brown, Morehouse, Oglethorpe, LaGrange, among others, are private as well.

The University System of Georgia has absorbed private colleges before. For example, around 1972, Gordon Military College (Barnesville) became a part of the University System and is know as Gordon College. As a junior college, Gordon Military College had many impressive football teams.

What I'm trying to say about PA is that PSSHE should acquire PSU.

I have one of my own, but it's still under construction. Once I finished it completely, I'll be able to post it.

I have a better idea for Kentucky:

WKU becomes SKU; WKU's Owensboro facilities keep WKU name.
SKU opens facilities in Somerset
Murray State becomes WKU
EKU becomes Richmond State
Morehead State becomes EKU
Morehead State's Ashland facilities become EKU-Ashland
KSU becomes Kentucky Commonwealth University
UL renames their Shelby campus in eastern Jefferson County as UL-Lyndon and then establishes facilities in Shelbyville (which is actually in Shelby County)

All the directional schools are now properly situated in the Commonwealth, and form one system with Richmond State and Kentucky Commonwealth.
