I have something that's been in my chest and I wanna discuss about it. And it's about division alignment play within an athletic conference. Ever since when do 12+-team conferences don't use division play for certain sports like basketball, but used for football? For example? The Big 12 once had division play (back when Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri and Texas A&M were there; and not West Virginia and TCU), but was only for football. But how come not for basketball at that time? Another sample. The SEC once had division play for most of its sports (including football and basketball). But since right before adding Missouri and Texas A&M like in 2010 or 2011, basketball no longer uses division play, but football still does. Oh, here's a unique sample: The Sun Belt Conference. Back when it had like 13 members in the 2009-10 season and used division play for basketball (not on football because UALR, New Orleans and Denver didn't have or never had sponsored football). A few seasons later (like this past season), division play was stilled used with only 11 members, which the requirement was supposed to be 12. Also, the SoCon had division play since the 1994-95 season, and it had like 10-11 members at that time. I believe that the minimum number of schools for an athletic conference should be 10 for most sports (like basketball or baseball or volleyball) and 12 for football; full membership status only. Lemme know your opinions or thoughts.
