I've decided. Don't know about you.

There is nothing to fear in possibility that a national collegiate football championship (with, for example, 8 schools) will adversely affect other aspects of college football.

I doubt that it will.

The argument goes that it would destory the bowl system. I don't see that happening. Why? We already have a hierarchial system within the BCS bowls; and, of course, we have two teams playing for a national championship. That USC and OU are playing in a national championship game will have no effect on fitting 100,000+ into the stands of the Rose Bowl (even without a Pac 10 team there).

The bowls without BCS status don't empty out because of the BCS bowls.

Truth is, college football is different from all other major sports. It values the regular season far more than other sports. It can have major games involving teams not in the race for anything because of the rivalries that exist.

More so than even college basketball, college football is about building a program. And the visibility that bowl games offer is a huge part of this building process. Nobody wants to give that up.

In college football, you can have a successful season by being second or third or top 25 in the end of the season polls. Hell, you can be successful being second in your conference. Even with a tournament, college football will never be "winner take all". It will continue to be about positioning, posturing among peers.

So if an 8 team championship system was set up, and the 4 BCS bowls became the first round on New Years, they would not adversely effect other I said, the current national championship game doesn't do that, why would a tournament.

An added note: if we ever get to the point where there is a national championship tournament, I would hope that the XII, SEC, ACC dump their conf championship game. A tournament of 8 teams needs to be very special, an honor won during the regular season. I personally don't want to see a fluke divisional winner representing a conference in such a field. I want to see the team that did the best during the regular season, a regular season far more interesting than any other sport. To me, despite its financial benefits, the conf champ game concept totally dishonors the regular season (as in OU-KSt last year...even though OU got into the championship game).
