Proof that any hack can get a job as a college football expert.
Just about everybody in a BCS conference (like Cincinnati) loads up on Sun-Belt / MAC / CUSA / Div. 1 FCS (you're allowed one per season) in their 4 OOC games which typically are up-front. So you could say the same about a multitude of Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Big XII, etc. schools RIGHT NOW. And the teams they beat up on have lousy records right now, because their "body bag" games are all up front.
Boise St. has been trying to play a tougher schedule and a lot of BCS auto-bid conference schools want NO PART of Boise State, because those guys are prretty darn good. If I'm the coach of a BCS auto-bid conference team, I've got a gauntlet in my 8 conference games, I want my 4 OOC games to be against a bunch of pansies, so even if my team has a "down year" we will win 6 or 7 and be bowl-eligible.
What REALLY galls me is that this jerk wants to exclude half of D-I before hte season even plays out !!!!
OK - then why have a season at all ? If all the pre-season pundits think it's Florida and USC in July... let's just eliminate the season and usher those two into the BCS Championship game.
NEVER MIND that USC has already slipped up and LOST to Washington (AHHHH.... what was their record last year ??? Anyone ??? Anyone ??? Beuhler ???? Anyone ??? 0 and 12 !!! 0-and-TWELVE !!!)
SO the pollsters will take care of Cincy and Boise State with their obvious bias.... Unless those teams run the table (that would be some accomplishment, wouldn't it ? It couldn't possibly include a loss to an 0-and-12 team), and the "perennial powerhouse" teams lose at least TWICE, they will not be in the final Top 2. Did we not see Utah receive this treatment from the pollsters last year ?
And did this genius sportswriter ever consider that "maybe one or both of thsoe teams just might happen TO BE THAT GOOD !" I always hated Howard Cosell, but he did have one great quote "That's WHY they play the game !"
In his early years at Penn State (late 1960s), coach Joe Paterno had two consecutive undefeated / untied teams. He faced a lot of bias in the polls since his schedule consisted of eastern independents and the occasional ACC team. In all honesty, in a typical year, he faced maybe 2 tough opponents. Yet the pollsters seem to ignore the fact that the Big Ten was Ohio State / Michigan and 8 also-rans, the SEC was won by Alabama EVERY year, the Big 8 was Oklahoma / Nebraska, the PAC was USC and (maybe UCLA or Stanford), the Southwest was Texas / Arkansas. So every sportswriter was biased toward his area of the country, and the fact was that most every conference had 2 haves and 6-8 have nots.
Yet Penn State consistently won 10+ games, and sent some GREAT players to the NFL. But in 1968, 1969, 1973, 1994, PSU went undefeated / untied and did NOT win a national championship. Yet Paterno has won close to 400 games and EVERY bowl game there is. And never shied away from taking on the other top ranked teams on the field in January.
Now the tables have turned. Before losing to their first tough opponent this year (Iowa), PSU was up to #5 in the polls.
Look at who they played in their first 4 OOC games.... MY GOD, it was a pathetic schedule. But since PSU is in the Big Ten and they have a good publicity machine, PSU was set up for a run at #1 (had they run the table) with a much softer schedule than Cincy or Boise State has played to date.
Let's decide it ON THE FIELD !!!
