Question --

Does anyone know why the new system will only pay each G5 conference up to $12M? So if a G5 conference has more than 12 schools, each would receive less than $1M. This limits G5 conferences to 12 members if they want maximum income per university as each school gets $1M plus money from having a CCG as well as any perks from bowl games, etc.

I only ask because, theoretically, the system would be okay with paying each school $1M. Right now there are 63 G5-level schools (64 with UAB, 65 with Coastal Carolina coming). CUSA has 13 (soon to be 14) schools and the MAC has 13 (soon to be 12) schools for football.

What if a conference like the Mountain West wanted to expand to 16? In a sparsely populated and spread out part of the country, it may behoove the Mountain West to have 2 8-school regional divisions to ease travel. Why not just cap it at $1M per school?

It is designed to discourage FCS schools from moving up just to claim their share of playoff money.
