OK.... reality check....

The first paragraph ends with "rumors have it that President Kustra received an invitatioin for Boise St. to join the MWC in 2008". This HAS TO BE FALSE. Kustra has been debasing himself and annoying his WAC Conference mates the last few years groveling for Boise St. to be invited to join the MWC. If Boise St. had been invited, they would have accepted the invitation within 5 minutes (time eenough for Kustra to comb his hair and set up the podium for the press confercnce.

The author seems to think that by doing this or that, the MWC will gain membership in the BCS.
He maust be extremely naive.... the BCS is a closed club - you have those on the inside, and those on the outside. There is no sense of fairness about it. The BCS will open itself up ONLY WHEN FORCED TO DO SO.
This "forcing" consists of congressional pressure to hit the BCS with legislation or anti-trust action.
Last congressinal hearings were around 2005. The BCS decided to grant one (1) at-large spot to a top 8 team that was undefeated & untied if not in a BCS auto-bid conference. Gee, thanks. If a second such team were undefeated / untied / in the Top 8 - TOO BAD !!!!

This cabal is all about keeping the big post-season TV $$$ within the Big 6 (+ Notre Dame).
Notice that Notre Dame is NOT in a conference, but they are guaranteed treatment that a chmpion team from the WAC, MWC, C-USA, MAC, Sun-Belt are not.

Will the BCS cave in to the MWC ? Maybe. But if they do, it's because they are doing what they feel is necessary to make Orrin Hatch go away.

Everyone would be far better off with the BCS dissolved and replaced by a 16-team playoff, operated by the NCAA, and structured the way the FCS Championship Playoff is set-up (perhaps with the exception of substituting the current Bowls as neutral site locations for the playoff games (the FCS grants higher seeds home field advantage in the early rounds, rather than using neutral sites).

Tute79,thanks for the post.

The thrust of the above linked article was whether the MWC would/should add BSU to try and fortify it's 7th BCS Autobid prospects.

Ferd Lewis out of Honolulu was apparently thinking about the same thing in his morning column at http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/artic ... oise+State

This article is "spot on".

And if the MWC calculates that the addition of Boise St. improves their rating enough in the "critical criteria", that could provide the impetus for the invitation.

After the BE was raided in 2003, the BCS (which included the BE, but not the MWC) allowed the BE to retroactively include the performance of Louisville during the previous few years (while they were in C-USA). This bumped up the Big East's ratings, so they were in the Top 6, and so the BCS still had some basis for excluding new conferences. So it seems only fair, that if Boise State joined the MWC, the BCS would let them retroactively include Boise State's record for the last few years.

If Boise State were to leave the WAC, the WAC would be left in perilous position of having 8 schools (the minimum).
The Big East only has 8 FB schools, but is in the enviable position of being able to add members at any time, just by picking up the phone. The WAC would be at 8, counting Louisiana Tech, who would rather be elsewhere. The WAC would then have a more urgent need to be grooming some Big Sky or Southland FCS --> FBS football aspirants to jump conferences as soon as this moratorium expires.

And these new polls just make you wonder.... do these pollsters actually watch the games ?

If I'm not mistaken...
Alabama struggled to beat unranked Tennessee.
Florida fairly-well outplayed unranked Mississippi State, however that game would have been a nail-biter had the SEC officials not screwed up AGAIN and missed that fact that a Florida player was stripped of the ball at the 2-yard line (no question he would have scored, had he not been waving the ball around loosely and celebrating early). That miscue gave Florida 7 points vs. a touch-back. Then MSU trailing DESPERATELY tried a fake punt from their own 20 which wound up giving Florida 7 more.
USC lost to a team that was 0-12 last year. NO WAY do they belong near the top of the polls after that !!!
Iowa struggles mightily and pulls a W out of their butts vs. Michigan State on the last play.
No ill effects, since they are members of the SEC / Big 10 / Big XII / PAC-10.

Meanwhile....
Boise clobbers Hawaii (OK they aren't that good, since Colt Brennan left), and drops in the polls.
Cincy wins with Tony Pike out, and drops in the polls.

Gee - do you think the pollsters are somewhat biased toward the "power conferences" ?
And when the Big East or WAC or MWC win a bowl game, they dismiss it as a "fluke".
Earlier FREAKED posted a rant by a hack writer who bemoaned that Boise / Cincy should not even be given the opportunity to challenge for the National Championship.
Relax, I said, the pollsters will take care of them.... they wont let them near the top 2 spots....

Tute79,thanks for the post.

Perhaps this article by Jerry Palm with "his" explanation of how the polls are working will be a calming influence?Link at http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/12420475

This week's polls are showing that the top MWC/WAC schools appear to be doing ok so far this year.I still believe that if the top MWC/WAC schools continue to win that they will eventually obtain a BCS autobid.

Thanks
Freaked

Oh Freaked, I'm calm enough.

Just saddened at what a racket this BCS crap is. Yeah, one of the MWC / WAC teams ought to win out, and snag a BCS at-large slot. But what's grossly unfair is how this whole gauntlet of junk exists to ensure that IF such a team "runs the table", there is NO WAY they can climb into the top 2 slots to have a shot at winning a National Championship on the field.

If that were to happen, it would totally legitimize the non-BCS-autobid conferences, irreparably harm the "aura and mystique" of the "power conferences", and expose the BCS structure for the farce that it is.

Utah accomplished a lot of that last year. Boise State opened eyes when they beat OU a few years back in the Fiesta.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of the WAC or MWC (my team is in the Big East). If the SEC / Big XII / Big Ten / PAC-10 team kicks the snot out of everyone on the field, they deserve all the acclaim. My gripe is when an upstart team comes along, they are automatically assumed to be unworthy. Settle it on the field, not in the polls !
