Denver Post article regarding BCS autobid situation with quotes from MWC Commish Craig Thompson.
Apparently this was the first year in the second four year conference performance window.Thompson says,"we have to prove ourselves again in 2009 and we're trying to get the next progressive step in the cycle"Apparently this next step is an automatic bid for the combined 5 conference non-BCS coalition. Link at http://www.denverpost.com/headlines/ci_11381974

I still believe that if the top MWC/WAC schools continue to win that they will eventually obtain a BCS autobid.

Thanks

I was really impressed by Utah's showing in the Sugar Bowl... Wow.. just Wow!

Freaked,

A couple of questions:

1 - When is the earliest the MWC can get an autobid - 2011?
2 - The currrent 10 BCS bowl games are locked in until the Jan 2014 bowl games?

Thanks,

Panther

Panther,thanks for the response.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the current schedule for reviewing BCS autobids.According to comments by the BCS administrator in a Washington Post article previously posted in this thread there appears to be a dual system.
If I understood this correctly,if one of the 5 "coalition" conferences were deemed to be "qualified" they could be selected to the 7th autobid slot after the 2010-2011 school year for a two year term.
The second track would involve the 6 current BCS autobid conferences which will be reviewed after 6 years, which would put them in synch with the next 4 year tv deal.
It is unclear as to whether the coalition and the bowls(other than the Rose) have "finalized" their contracts past the next two years.
This could/may be an interesting story to follow for the next couple of years.

Thanks

Panther,followup to my above post.
Article by Dennis Dodd w/ comments from John Swofford confirming that a non BCS autobid conference could possibly obtain an autobid for 2012 and 2013.Apparently this decision was made "quietly in September".Link at http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootba ... y/11238522

Also, wire story with more Swofford quotes regarding the BCS.He says the BCS Bowls will likely stay the same for this next 4 year period. Link at http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/art ... QD95J6EU81

Final Coaches and AP 2008 FB polls at http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/rankingsindex

Looks like two MWC schools in top 10 and three in top 25.

Looks like a Texas group has issued a press release claiming that by using the final computer polling information they can show that Utah was #1.Link to press release at http://www.utah2008champs.com/press-release

Apparently BSU President Bob Kustra submitted a congratulatory letter regarding Utah FB to the Salt Lake Tribune.
How does this letter rate on the "suck up" meter? Link at http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_11463828

It won't be too long now before the ball drops on MWC expansion.... The WAC simply can't compete in either public perception, attendance, academics, media markets, enrollment numbers, on the field sucess, basketball.....

The question is, how does the WAC recover from being raided? Montana is in no legal shape to move up to FBS, half of the conference (Idaho, Utah State, New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, and yes, Nevada-Reno) is within 5k of failing attendance requirements. If Boise and Fresno leave, will Hawaii leave the conference for football independence? I think they'd be better off doing this than staying in a post-apoclyptical WAC.

I think the solution is to instead embrace a hybrid or partial hybrid conference. Since several WAC schools have decent basketball (uNR and Utah State in particular) why not set up a conference with a couple of other key players (Denver? Weber State? UC Davis?) and shoot for those NCAA tournament credits.... Maybe while maintaining an FCS football league....

Just a suggestion.

Recently BSU Prexy Bob Kustra had a congratulatory letter for Utah printed in the Salt Lake Trib.It has been previously posted above in this thread.Apparently the folks in Fresno and possibly elsewhere thought it had something to do with Boise's future conference goals. Here is article with Mr Kustra's response at http://www.2news.tv/news/local/38028674.html

Article in today's USAToday indicating that MWC Commish Thompson plans to meet with BCS Coordinator Swofford, apparently at the urging of MWC Presidents, in an effort to push for a MWC autobid PRIOR to 2012-2013 if possible.Commissioner Thompson also reiterates the MWC position against expansion unless it would GUARANTEE a BCS autobid. This should be an interesting story to follow.Link at http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ ... west_N.htm

Salt LakeTrib article with comments from Utah Prexy who is eager to meet with John Swofford to discuss the BCS autobid situation. He confirms that the BCS deal thru 2013 has been agreed to and signed. This appears to be an attempt to see if an early BCS bid can be "negotiated for".Link at http://www.sltrib.com/utahutes/ci_11557254

Article in TCU paper with comments by MWC Associate Commissioner Javan Hedlund regarding the MWC push for a BCS autobid.According to him the MWC ranks #6 so far this ranking period with 3 more years to go.If the BCS would release the official BCS autobid data and and ranking formulas we at home could "follow along" better.
If the MWC is really sitting in the # 6 slot why would they want to expand at this time unless it guaranteed them a BCS autobid spot?
I continue to believe that if the top MWC/WAC schools continue to win that they will eventually receive a BCS autobid.
