All you've ever wanted to know about CONCACAF

In an effort to bring more members from the other wonderful CONCACAF nations I thought this would be a helpful start, and also help people learn more about our confederation, and help people who are interested in CONCACAF to learn more about it.

I hope you find it informative. Also, feel free to add anything you'd like.

What is CONCACAF?

CONCACAF (the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) is the continent-wide governing body for association football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Three South American entities, the independent nations of Guyana and Suriname, and the French département of French Guiana, are also members.

CONCACAF was founded in its current form in 1961 and is one of the six continental confederations affiliated with FIFA. Its primary administrative functions are to organize competitions for national teams and clubs, and to conduct World Cup qualifying tournaments.

CONCACAF back to basics in new qual proposal
Image
Tweaked WCup system would maintain Hex, see US get bye into semis

US vs. Mexico in World Cup qualifying is not going anywhere after all. At least, that's the case if FIFA approves the proposed format submitted by CONCACAF this week.

FIFA's rejection last month of CONCACAF's plea for additional World Cup berths – which could have resulted in the separation of the US and Mexico in World Cup qualifying entirely – sent the federation back to the drawing board. And what it came up with is more or less a return to the old system.

The new plan calls for the six top-ranked sides in the region, as per FIFA's world rankings for March – the United States, Mexico, Honduras, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Cuba – to automatically qualify for the semifinal round, which features three four-team groups.

No World Cup?
Image
There's always Copa America

Consensus is that the US was robbed of the 2022 World Cup. Well, here comes the next best thing. And it even comes six years earlier!

The president of the Ecuadorean soccer federation, whose brother is on the CONMEBOL executive committee, told Mexican media that the USA is a potential candidate to host the 2016 Copa América in celebration of the South American confederation's 100-year anniversary.

Chiriboga noted that the special edition of the 2016 Copa América would feature 16 teams:
10 from South America
6 from CONCACAF.

Apparently there would be a qualification process to determine the six CONCACAF nations.

Four groups of four teams with Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and the USA in separate groups? Fans will flock.

If US fans thought that was big news, the Ecuadorean chief also mentioned that the US would likely get an inivitation to participate in the 2015 Copa América in Brazil.

There are also plans to continue and expand Copa Libertadores participation among Concacaf teams, Compean said, with the added incentive of pushing the North American continent's sides into the Copa Sudamericana, a tournament in which clubs from the region stopped participating four years ago.

Hexagonal set: Costa Rica, Jamaica join USA & Mexico
Image

And then there were six. With Tuesday's results in the books, the participants of CONCACAF's final round of 2014 World Cup qualifying — a.k.a. "The Hexagonal" — are set.

Joining the United States in the Hex are Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico and Panama. The US got the job done with a 3-1 win over Guatemala, who were leapfrogged by Jamaica after the Reggae Boyz' 4-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda in Kingston.

Format

The fourth round will see the 3 group winners and 3 group runners-up from the third round compete in a single group of 6 teams. This stage is often referred to as the Hexagonal or Hex, and has been used by CONCACAF to determine its World Cup finals entrants since the qualification tournament for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

The matches are scheduled to be played from 6 February to 15 October 2013. The top three teams will advance to the World Cup finals tournament in Brazil, and the fourth-placed team will advance to a play-off against the winner of the Oceania qualifiers.
