Beckham exploring possibility of joint MLS/UM stadium

David Beckham’s group is exploring the feasibility of building a soccer stadium that would be large enough to accommodate the University of Miami football team, and UM would have interest if the stadium meets the school’s requirements and if the Hurricanes can somehow escape their long Sun Life Stadium lease, according to sources on both sides.

Beckham’s group and UM have had preliminary discussions, but the Beckham camp and MLS likely need a couple of months to determine whether it’s realistic.

UM has told the Beckham camp that it needs a stadium with at least 40,000 seats to accommodate Hurricanes games; Beckham’s group initially has spoken of having 25,000 seats. UM also would need the stadium to have sufficient parking, large enough locker-rooms and enough suites.

UM wants no fewer than 40,000 seats because it has about 30,000 season-ticket holders and allots 6000 seats for students and another 4000 to sell to the visiting team.

Here is how a proposed 40,000 MLS/UM stadium at Port Miami could look

If the U wants to front for part of the cost AND make their field removable somehow, cool.

The Houston Dynamo already shared their new Stadium with Texas Southern as part of the cost of building it.

NYCFC unveil two club badge designs, ask fans to vote
Image

New York City FC are leaving the future badge of the club in their supporters hands.

On Monday, NYCFC revealed two badge designs created by Alfalfa Studio’s Rafael Esquer and asked fans to vote to decide which design will become the club’s official badge. Fans have from Monday through March 13 to vote on their favorite badge design.

Both designs are influenced by urban artifacts in New York City. The design on the left features a shield in the shape of the seal of New York City, with overlapping NYC letters in the middle. The design on the right is shaped like an old subway token and also has the same overlapping NYC letters in the middle. Both crests have the words “New York City” above the letters and “Football Club” below.

“This badge is to be the symbol of our club, a symbol of our players and we hope in time, a symbol of this city,” NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna said in a statement. ”That is why we decided to give our fans the power to take part in such a fundamental way. Thanks to the work of Rafael Esquer we feel that we have two designs that truly represent our club and our city, and we’re excited to see which badge they choose.”

Over the course of four days last week, more than 100,000 votes were cast, deciding the badge that will become the bedrock of the club’s identity and a focal point of all team gear and merchandise. New York City FC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna, Chief Business Officer Tim Pernetti, and Head Coach Jason Kreis unveiled the winning badge in front of New York City FC leadership, partners, supporters and members of the media at the Adidas Store in New York City this evening.

David Beckham-led Miami expansion group
releases plans for opulent bayside stadium project

Image

David Beckham-led group bringing Major League Soccer to Miami is targeting a centrally located Port of Miami location for its new $200 million stadium, and they're hoping the release of the project's opulent plans will help make it happen.

The plans for the project, which includes an open-air stadium with up to 35,000 seats that features an undulating roof that provides sweeping views of downtown cityscapes, were unveiled Monday in Miami.

Confirming speculation that Beckham’s group would aim for a downtown stadium near the Biscayne Bay, the retired player’s real-estate advisor, John Alschuler, told The Miami Herald that he hopes releasing plans for the stadium would build support for project on a contested piece of the port’s Dodge Island.

Which of Beckhams's rich buddies is enthused about paying to build this ?

(Or would they adopt the MLB / NFL / NBA / NHL concept of using tax-payer money ?)

Isn't that the Costa Concordia (run aground) in the back-ground ?
I think that's their logo on the ship's funnel....

Sounders 'highly likely' to field USL Pro team in 2015
Image

GM Adrian Hanauer tells Don Ruiz that team will probably be owned and operated by Sounders and play at Starfire, at least to start.

It appears the Seattle Sounders are poised to launch a USL Pro team in 2015 that will play its games at Starfire Sports Complex. This isn't necessarily a "new" development, but Sounders GM and part owner Adrian Hanauer made possibly his most firm statement on this possibility during an interview with Don Ruiz of the Tacoma News-Tribune.

New York Red Bulls ready to launch USL PRO side in 2015:
"We see it as a big, big advantage"

Image

If all goes according to plan, the New York Red Bulls will soon follow the footsteps of the LA Galaxy and field a team in USL PRO.

Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said at the club’s media day on Tuesday that New York are currently well into the process of launching a third-division side, set to begin play next year. Roxburgh told reporters back in December that the Red Bulls had explored the possibility of launching a USL PRO club for 2014, but that they were not able to finalize the plans in time.

Etihad Airways to sponsor MLS club NYC FC
Image

“New York is a legendary sports town, as well as a thriving global city with a rapidly expanding soccer fan-base,” said Ferran Soriano, CEO of Manchester City, back in May of 2013. “We are thrilled to contribute to the energy and growth of New York City Soccer. In the Yankees, we have found the absolute best partner for developing a world-class sports organization and a winning team that will carry the New York City Football Club name with pride.”

So it might not be too surprising that Etihad Airways, the sponsor for Manchester City is also the sponsor for NYC FC, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Etihad Airways announced as official airline partner of Major League Soccer

Within the new agreement, Etihad Airways becomes the official airline partner of MLS in the United States. It is the Abu Dhabi-based airline’s first multi-year sports sponsorship in the territory and one that underscores its expanding commitment to the U.S. market.

FC Dallas B Team?
Image
FRISCO, Texas – Hunt Sports Group vice president Dan Hunt has spoken in the past of his admiration for FC Barcelona’s venerated youth system, and if recent reports are true, FC Dallas may soon be emulating one aspect of the La Liga giants' player development model with a “B” team playing as a full member of a lower-division league.

A recent report from the USL PRO blog RecklessChallenge.net speculates that FC Dallas could be one of at least two MLS clubs fielding a second team starting next season in the U.S. Soccer pyramid’s third tier.

FC Dallas officials declined to comment on the report when contacted by MLSsoccer.com, but the 20-odd game season played by USL PRO teams would certainly be in line with FCD’s vision for player development as recently articulated by Hunt.

Should FC Dallas be one of those teams, they have multiple local options to stage USL PRO league games with Toyota Stadium, the adjacent Toyota Soccer Center and the recently awarded contract to manage Soccer Park at Elm Fork in Northwest Dallas.

Atlanta Falcons president says team inching closer to Major League Soccer expansion franchise
Image
EXPANSION PROGRESS IN ATLANTA
Image

In one of the clearest indications yet that Atlanta could be next in line of a Major League Soccer expansion franchise, Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay told local officials Thursday that his side is "far along in negotiations" with MLS about bringing a team to the city, the league's first foray into the Southeast outside of Florida in league history. The Falcons want a soccer team to play at a new $1.2 billion retractable-roof stadium that will break ground just south of the Georgia Dome sometime in the spring.

Tannenwald:
Atlanta confirmed as Major League Soccer’s next expansion market

By Doug Roberson
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Image

A Major League Soccer expansion franchise is coming to Atlanta.

An announcement is scheduled for April 16 in Atlanta, a person with knowledge of the situation said Sunday. The Atlanta team would become the 22nd franchise in MLS and would open play in 2017, which is also when the new $1 billion downtown stadium is scheduled to open.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank has been pursuing a franchise for several years. Both sides have acknowledged that they have been in deep discussions but neither seemed to have a timetable.

A Major League Soccer official issued this statement on Sunday: “We are continuing discussions with Arthur Blank to bring a Major League Soccer expansion team to Atlanta; however, we have not finalized an agreement at this time.”
