Big East splits into two conferences Basketball and Football. Penn St. leaves the Big 10 and joins the Big East with Army, Navy and Massachusetts.

SEC takes Texas and Texas A&M, Auburn moves to the Eastern Part of the SEC.

Big 12 takes Colorado St and TCU from the WAC.

Pac 10 takes Hawaii from the WAC, and UNLV from the Mountain West.

Mountain West takes Fresno St., Boise St., Nevada, New Mexico St., Idaho and Utah St. thus the end of the WAC.

Louisiana Tech seeing no WAC left, leaves for the Sunbelt Conference.

Big 10 after losing Penn St., invites Notre Dame and they accept and also Illinois St or Indiana St or Minnesota St. or Temple or Maybe even Iowa State.

What do you think? Feel Free to tear up or support me anyway don't get mad and have fun with it. Thanks FBG

I can't think out too much of my realignment out now, but this is what sticks in my mind:

WAC decides to be bold and raids the West Coast Conference for Gonzaga, Pepperdine, and U of San Francisco.

Big East splits, somehow forces ND into the conference for all sports, grabs Delaware and UMass, and then waits for a mystery member.

Big Ten grabs Missouri.
Pac 10 grabs Hawaii and Colorado.
More to come...

Does "the sixteen" have 15 teams on purpose?

I've pondered a similar setup for the conferences that bleed into a natural conf champ playoff. But I think that the 12 team conferences are about as big as is practical. Even with a 12 game schedule you'd have 7 division games, add on 3 inter-division games and your left with 2 OOC games.
There is an argument to made that the deleted OOC game is usually some powder puff so why not make it a conference game instead. But, it comes back to all conferences not being created equal. Why should an SEC/BIG 12/Big 10/ACC team be penalized with an extra "Could Kill" game while some conferences are loaded with perinial powder puffs?

Just my thoughts, Back to you. 8-)

Well, it's been tried once, and did not work out.

Actually, the thinking is that the Big East will split in a few years anyway and this is temporary. In some dark corners it is even whispered it is temporary ON PURPOSE.

Anyway, my real thoughts are that 16 can't work in the long run. It creates too much seperation, especially in football. The two divisions are almost two different conferences who simply play a bowl game (oops championship game) against each other. There just ends up being not enough familiarity and identification between the two divisions.

Your football scheduling choices (assuming a basic 8 game conf. schedule) basically end up being to either (1) not play everyone in your division each year or (2) only play each school in the other division twice every SIXTEEN years or (3) play 9 or more conf. games leaving even less room for non-conf. matchups.

That is why 9 conference games are needed if 16 team conferences are ever to come to pass.

That way, you can play the other 7 teams in your divison plus 2 teams from the other division each year. Over a four year period, you would get a visit from each team in the other division.

In 20 years, I bet we end up with four 16 team conferences.

Um... you play 2 teams from the other division a year. Unless you're a rich puke school allowed to buy a home game out from some weakling, one of those games will be on the road. Therefore, it's 8 years, not 4.

Give us 5 years before determining that the Big East 16 "works." BTW, it's the 16 that gets me, not necessarily the "East" in the equation.

one of the down sides of a 16 team conference would be a total lack of loyalty to the organization. that number of teams will do little to create a sense of identity for the member schools and its fans.

if we truly want to go to such an idea, why not go the way and make it like the NFL, including all appropriate 1-A members with a pro-style play-off set up (not that I am suggesting I'd like to see this happen)

Seems more and more people are thinking 16 might be perfect. I have always thought it would work
