Heisman voters are obviously not very knowledgable either. 5 finalists are White, Smith, Leinart, Petersen and Bush. The last 2 have no business being there. It should be Benson and Arrington or maybe even the Auburn QB. After mentioning who were the finalists, they commented that Benson would probably be the #1 pick in the NFL draft.

The stats are below, but they are not formatting well. In passing efficiency Lefors of Louisville is 1st, Smith 2nd, Campbell of Auburn 3rd, White 6th, Rodgers of Cal 7th, Leinart 9th. I didn't include passing yardage, but none of them are at the top as it is the Texas Tech QB and the Hawaii QB who lead.

In yards per game, Thomas of UNT is first with 189 ypg and 6.68 per carry, Arrington is 2nd with 168 ypg and 6.99 per carry (and 1st in total yards), Benson is 4th with 160 ypg and 5.82 per carry, Peterson is 6th with 153 and 5.87 per carry, Bush is 87th!!!! with 69 ypg and 6.08 per carry. In points per game Williams of Memphis is 1st with 12.0/game and 132 total points. Benson is 5th (3rd in total points) with 10.91/game and 120 total points (and 3rd ALL-Time in TDS). Arrington is 32nd with 7.64/game and 84 total points. Bush and Peterson are 39th with 7.5/game and 90 total points (both had 12 game seasons).

boy, don't know where you find the time to be so thoroughly thorough, bullet, lol...

aside from the stats, what weight would you assign the "politics"and skills of the pr department at each school?

gotta be at least a third of the vote perhaps?

;D

Reggie Bush also has a lot of receiving yards and return yeards. For total yards per game he's fifth in the nation at 181.75 ypg, and did so with an average 9.91 yards per time he touched the ball. Arrington is the much better running back, but overall Bush is responsible for a lot more of his teams production (Arrington's #'s: 176 and 6.82; Benson: 176.64 & 5.98). Of the five people ranked above Bush in the total yards category their schools are Northern Ill., Memphis, North Texas and Kansas State (Sproles). Given the season's each of those other schools had, and considering their competition, Bush begins to stand out. This isn't a campaign for him, mind you, just a warning not to get caught up in the straight numbers from someone who's used stats for many things as well.

Yes, politics is a large part of it, and too many people throw extra weight into the offensive skill positions. There's also perhaps too much emphasis on who's team is winning. How often are the championship contenders the result of a sound team while some individual raises an also ran into untold heights? Is this supposed to be the most valuable player to their team, to college football as an entity, or simply the best overall player? Given the track record of former Heisman winners in the NFL, I think we're finding the voting is sketchy anyway, and in my view the award has lost some luster because of it.

BTW, ESPN.com's Page 2 has a hilarious article offering acceptance speeches for each of the candidates. Very witty.

I was trying to find Bush anywhere in the stats and had trouble finding him. I finally found him way down the rushing lists. I didn't see him on the receiving leaders, but must have just missed him since he was down a ways. With those #s he's a little more reasonable a pick.

I still go with Arrington and Benson. Both have had great seasons and its not like they are playing for losing teams. And Benson is one of the top backs all time and should be better than 6th, 7th or 8th, whereever he ended up (all time leader in games scoring TDs, 3rd all time in total TDs, 5th all time in rushing and will probably end up 4th after the bowl, one of 5 backs to rush for 1,000 yds 4 years in a row).

This is more politics.
JJ Arrington is the best RB in the country. There is NO way he should be excluded in this. Now, you could argue that perhaps it's Benson, and we will go round and round. But Adrian Peterson, and Reggie Bush? NO way, NO how! This is more politics for the winning teams, and the stupid uninformed media who really don't know much about what they write about generating there own campaign based on pre-season hype.

As for Qb's...it's a little tougher because there are more intangibles vs. which to measure. QB rating is a variable stat created to somehow rate QB's, which it doesn't necessarily do.

If Peterson or Bush wins it will be a travesty. Leinert, White or Smith you could actually make an argument for.
8-)

Leinart 1st, Peterson came out 2nd, Benson a very distant 6th, Arrington 8th.
