KENT STATE AROUND THE BEAT Line coach Mottola not retained

Kent State’s inability to run the football and season-long difficulties in protecting quarterback Michael Machen during a disappointing 1-10 campaign led to what is expected to be the only off-season change in the Golden Flashes’ coaching staff.
Less than one week after finishing the 2005 season with an ugly 35-3 loss to arch-rival Akron, Kent State announced that offensive line coach Bill Mottola would not be retained for the 2006 season. Athletic director Laing Kennedy said there would be no further changes to head coach Doug Martin’s staff.
“I appreciate everything Bill has done for the Kent State program over the last five seasons,” said Martin. “This was a very difficult decision to make, and although our offense had excelled in recent years, I felt that it was time to make a change for the future of our program.”
Mottola had been on the Kent State coaching staff since 2001.
The former offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky and offensive line coach at the U.S. Military Academy was put in the same difficult position as the rest of the Flashes coaches this past season, tutoring a unit that was devastated by injury. The search for his replacement will begin immediately.
