Lets say that a network offered college football 300- 400 million to have 16 team tournament in which to be an eligible conference the conference had to have at least 9 members. Additionally, teams were only allowed 11 regular season games. Instead of the magic number being 12 (for the championship game) you would have conferences wanting to downsize in order maximize revenue with playoff teams. Lets also assume that part of the deal was that the sunbelt and Mac reps had to have a playin game to get to the tourney. This is what I think you would see be the results of conference contraction.

They could give the conference champs of each league an automatic bid (11 with one play in game) then 5 at large bids (so appease notre dame). They could have everyone play all their games before thanks giving and have the thanksgiving weekend as an orgy of college football playoffs first round.
