Given the rash of major conference tournament champions that have exited the NCAA tournament quickly, should conference post season tournaments be limited to 8 teams?
Pros:
* Adds value to regular season games in larger conferences
* Reduces missed class time
* Reduces risk of injury
* Reduces possibility of doormat team winning an automatic bid
Cons:
* May make ticket sales more difficult (fewer ways to divide the same arena)
* Effectively eliminates more teams during the regular season
* Fewer games on which to earn TV revenue
If that rule were in effect this season:
South Carolina would not have qualified for the SEC tournament, much less finished second.
Syracuse would be in the NIT; Rutgers, Louisville, and Notre Dame would have also sat out the Big East tournament.
