Who are the only NCAA basketball champions to have also won or shared national football championships in the past 50 years?

Stretching back to the fifties? Hmmmm.

I know Michigan State is one. Similar fact was hyped when they won their bball title in 2000. Ohio State has come close, too, and their among the few programs going with stout support for both major sports.

I can only assume UCLA is the other. I don't know when they last won it all in football, but heaven knows they have plenty of basketball trophies and a solid football reputation.

Both of these programs won shared national titles in football, finishing undefeated (the 1965 Michigan State team lost in their bowl game, as did the 1953 Maryland team)....

Maryland (football: 1953; basketball: 2002)
UCLA (football: 1954; basketball: 1964-1965, 1967-1973, 1975, 1995)
Arkansas (football: 1964; basketball 1994)

I didn't include UCLA because their football championship wasn't in the past 50 years.

In 1964, Arkansas finished second in both major polls, which is what I was using to determine championships. Did someone else award them a title?

No.

Arkansas was recognized in 64 by a number of organizations & computer that chose teams after the bowls. The Football Writers are probably the most significant. AP & UPI both chose the champs before the bowls that year.

Alabama & Arkansas were both 10-0 in the regular season. Arkansas won the Cotton over Nebraska. Alabama and pre-Broadway Joe Namath lost the Orange to Texas 21-17. Texas was 9-1 with their lone loss 14-13 to Arkansas when they failed on a 2 point conversion in the closing minutes (as you might recall, 5 years later DKR and Texas made a 2 point conversion in the 4th quarter and ended up winning 15-14 in the Big Shootout).

I think Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones were affilited with that Arkansas team.

Wasn't Switzer the freshman coach for Johnson and Jones? Didn't realize that Ken Hatfield was an Arkansas alum...makes the move to Clemson seem very strange (IPTAY over Broyles?)...anyway, his successor at Arkansas (Jack Crowe, the guy who lost to Citadel in their first football game as an SEC member and was subsequently fired) was replaced by Danny Ford, whom Hatfield had replaced at Clemson...small world...Hatfield at Rice also makes more sense knowing that he is an Arkansas alum (that, and he built the Air Force program with relatively similar academic requirements)...
