Prior to 1993, a number of Division I or II schools played some of their sports in a lower division than the other teams. This was especially prevalent in football.

Now I'm wondering, what other sports featured some schools "playing down"? Can anyone give me a few examples?

Honestly, I think football was the only sport this was allowed to happen in, because of the size of the team required. I know that "official" Division II hockey schools do sort of play down in competing in the DIII ECAC, but they aren't eligible to compete in the NCAA tournament.

Minnesota-Crookston did the same thing in hockey until a year or two ago when the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association kicked them out.
