I think some of our discussions on realignment have got a little too heated recently, and I'm partially to blame for that. I know that we all feel very passionately about the sport we love, college football, and that is good and healthy for the sport. As much we modernists and traditionalists hate to admit it, both modernism & traditionalism can co-exist in college football. Modernism is definitely on the rise with conference expansion, but I think that a slow return to some traditionalism has been overlooked by us all. For example, this year Georgia is playing Clemson, a traditional rival that the Dawgs have played since the turn of the century. Not too long ago, Penn State renewed its historic rivalry with Pittsburgh, and there are talks of bringing it back on a permanent basis like it used to be played. Florida also renewed its historic rivalry with Miami, and Alabama's been playing a somewhat traditional rival in Oklahoma. There are other traditional rivalries that will be played this year also. So, from this, we can see that tradition and modernism can co-exist in the sport. Peace to all. :)

Why I admire this board...

When I first started to contribute to this board, I was attracted not only by the high level of insight and intelligent discussion, but also by the extraordinary courtesy and deference shown by members to one another. This courtesy was extended accross all types of writers, personality types, communication style, degree of participation, regional preference, etc.

There was a tradition here of no flaming or name-calling, which is remarkably different from other boards, as all of you well know. That, almost more than the info imparted, is what makes this board special. Of late, the summer heat and lack of news has gotten to some of the very best of us, and has resulted in some unpleasant verbal jousting and irrational , inadvertent and inappropriate invective (what did I just say?)...

Lets all try to understand we all have our weak moments, think 24 hours before responding while we might be angry, have lots and lots and lots of good differences, but use name-calling for taxes or terrorists, not the honorable, decent, well-intentioned human beings participating here....

Peace...

This board has been a little rough lately.

Peace from the Buckeye Nation.

Sometimes I try to inject a little boldness or defiance from the norm to actually generate reactive comments. I have even contradicted myself, depending on the timing and thread of the post. Actually, I thought people have been pretty civil, particularly from those who are regular in their posts.
We do see some "nutty" comments at times. However, I have been impressed with some of the research, depth, and command of the subject matter that quite a few have shown.

BlackGold, Lash, and other injured parties,
As you may know, some of the "guest" have been impersonating some of our members. I read several post that I thought were done by BlackGold, only to later realize that is was a "guest" posting as Black Gold. This board has always distinguished itself by being civil. We don't want some outsiders to ruin that.

In the spirt of the season, let's all forgive each other and blame it on these "guest." Happy Holidays to all.

I am relatively new here, but I still think I may be correct in saying that most of the "stuff" has been between members and so-called guests (who may be members in disguise anyway). I don't recall ever seeing two members go at it. I may be wrong, but I bet if I am then at least what I speak of is usually the case. Still, I have been VERY impressed with this group in all ways.

Amen,

You are correct caticusstevus. I generally admire members more than non-members, but I can understand the feeling of some guests about not wanting email addresses and such harvested by webbots.

This is generally a very polite board, although there are occasional disagreements that may get a tad too personal (sigh). I generally withdraw from a thread if it gets a little too hot, trusting it will cool down eventually, and it usually does.

I do wish more of the boards were restricted to members only, although there always ought to be one or two boards open to guests. They do contribute quite a bit. Guests know though that one of the benefits of registration is to have their name protected, and generally registrants have a much greater level of respect among the other "regulars" who do register. I have never received a spam email from this board, only an occasional communication from KingCal about changes, etc.

Like many board frequenters, I always use a separate yahoo account for all board or restricted newssite registrations, completely separate from my normal email to prevent webbot harvesting.

I still get an amazing amount of spam in my regular aol account though, despite all preventive measures and spam filters.

Such is life. Hope all of you have happy holidays with lots of good bowl games. Special interest now in the TCU/Boise game before Christmas, as there are rumors an announcement re MWC may precede or follow that game.

8-)

****

And, Javaman, also sadly different from driving our cars through metropolitan traffic, standing in line in a super market, sitting in the stands of a stadium, or going to a PTA meeting. Just about everywhere out there in disconnected America today.

Civility in this society (this board excepted) has been in pitifully short supply. I wonder what commentary it would make as to the decline of our civilization if people in the future could read the comments make to each other on most internet boards.

Peace to everyone during this holiday season.
