Get rid of sub A classifications for DI football.

Make all DI football programs have no more than 63 schol. and let them split those 63 as they like.

Then have an 11 game regular season, a championship game for every conference that wants one for a 12th game, then a 4 week 16 team playoff.

This is how I would attempt to do things if I were the College football Guru... ;)

I would love to see at least 3 d-1 schools per state and at least one per major city...I have written somewhere before but abbreviated my d-1 requirement in a nutshell would be like you could have like 40-80 schollies and at least a 15,000 seat stadium in the end I would have a tourney of 15 Conferences altogether and have 64 out of 183 make 5 week tourney. #1 vs #64 so you theoretically (I.E.) would see an USC matchup vs. Montana in the first round...the first rounds hosted by higher ranked teams and secondary rounds lesser bowls to bigger bowls...i would start the season a earlier and have at least a week off during tourney...all schools have to at least schedule twelve teams but if you make it to tourney you would not have to play the games...if you don't make it you are playing those extra games...similar to the way our high schools play in Western Pa...but again you have to play the alt games...I would have no 1-AA but just Divison 2 anywhere from 15-39 schollies-maybe a couple of of these teams could play D-1 basketball and fatten that calf up some more...but Bids for some of these schools would come from "play-in games" I would like to see two play in games per region! this way if a team like Oakland wins like they did at least the "better" team throughout the year would have a chance at the NCAA's. I like the NIT and this is not meant to slight them but...the Big dance is top dog...this is my rough sketch on the d-1 landscape

David K,
Your alignment looks O.K. to me, but I don't see a need for balance if your don't have a playoff. Obviously the Sun Belt and the WAC are much weaker than the SEC and Big12.

P.S. see the Balance thread.

Update(6-2-06): Dropped Birmingham-Southern(moving down to Division III) and Langston(Staying NAIA); Replaced BSC with Houston Baptist(NAIA), moved Lane(D-II) to SWAC and replaced Lane in SIAC with Morehouse(D-II). Also decided to post a separate update so this topic doesn't move to the second page ;D
