There may really not be much left of Division I FCS (formerly known as I-AA) if this comes to pass. Southern Utah, Cal Poly SLO, and UC Davis (assuming they don't upgrade) could all be asked to join the Big Sky, which would likely be curtains for the Great West Football Conference-especially if the Dakota schools are in the Gateway Football Conference or playing football under the Summit League name.

Ok, that is one. The WAC needs at least 4 additional schools to off set 2-3 schools leaving and maybe La tech. Unless the WAC forms a regional division around La tech.

Would the shakeout look something like this?

Mountain West West: Boise St, Fresno St, SD State, UNLV, BYU, Utah
Mountain West East: Colo State, TCU, Air Force, New Mexico, Wyoming, UTEP (which actually is in Mountain Time Zone)

C-USA: Same except La Tech replaces UTEP

WAC: Hawaii, SJ State, Nevada, Idaho, Utah State, NM State, Portland State, Montana

Big Sky West: Sac State, Idaho State, E Wash, N Arizona, Weber State, S Utah
Big Sky East: Montana State, N Colorado, ND State, SD State, N Dakota, S Dakota

This arrangement leaves Cal Poly and UC Davis in a tough spot, maybe both could upgrade and help fill out the WAC. Also I don't know if Montana would be willing to go to Division I-A, I think Portland State makes good sense for the WAC though.

I wouldn't see any reason for the Big Sky to go 12-it would also make more sense for Cal Poly SLO and UC Davis to play Big Sky football rather than the four Dakota schools. I also think Sacramento State and/or UC Davis would upgrade their football programs and join the WAC; even if both of those came to pass, the Big Sky would still have at least six for football. The Big Sky could add Denver and Utah Valley State if more members are needed for all sports. Even San Diego may move to scholarship football.

Also, if all four Dakota schools are in The Summit (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference), along with Southern Utah and Western Illinois, that makes six for football-those schools will probably be required to play Summit League football.

MWC Pacific: Boise State, Fresno State, Sand Diego State, UNLV, BYU, Utah
MWC East: Colorado State, TCU, Air Force, New Mexico, Wyoming, UTEP

WAC (10): Hawaii, SJ State, Nevada, Sacramento State, California-Davis, Idaho, Utah State, New Mexico State, Portland State, Montana

Big Sky (9): Idaho State, Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, Weber State, Montana State, Northern Colorado, Cal Poly SLO, Denver, Utah Valley State
