March Madness Matchups and Conference Realignment Connections

Since deals so much with conference realignment, I thought i'd take a break from examining the matchups from a "Who will win" perspective to finding some interesting conference realignment connections in the games and potential games in each region.

Potential Game: Louisville vs Wake Forest
Louisville moved to the Big East thanks to openings made by the ACC raid, Wake Forest's conference. The move to the Big East gave Louisville a real opportunity to be a #1 seed (see Memphis in CUSA as a #2 seed despite 30 wins). Louisville had also been a potential ACC candidate back in the late 90's.

West Virginia vs Dayton:
The move of WVU and Rutgers to the Big East from the A10 opened doors for A10 membership. Dayton was one of those schools who joined the A10...and has flourished.

BYU vs Texas A&M:
When the Big 8 became the Big XII, BYU was set to be the 12th member. But when then Texas Gov. Ann Richards put the pressure on the 3 Texas schools (Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech) to include Baylor...or else she's try to block the 3 schools from joining...BYU was left out and Baylor in.

Potential Game: Memphis vs Marquette
Memphis was left out of the CUSA raid by the Big East when Cincinnati, Louisville, South Florida, Depaul and Marquette joined. Fast forward a few years and perhaps a Big East split with non-football schools like Marquette being seperated from football schools could open the door for a Memphis reunification with Louisville and Cincinnati.

Potential Game: Pittsburgh vs Xavier
Similar to the Memphis/Marquette story, a Big East split would likely lead to an invite to Xavier to join with the current Big East non-football schools.

Potential Game: VCU vs American
it will take two upsets, but both schools used to be members of the CAA before Americna left for the Patriot.

Potential Game: UCLA vs Texas
Back in 1990, the Pac-10 toyed with expansion by considering invites to Texas and Colorado.

Potential Game: Michigan vs Syracuse
Syracuse is often considered an option for the Big Ten's #12 spot should they expand by 1 team.

See any other potential conference realignment plotlines, comment away!
