There was little suspense that ODU and LEC would be accepted, since they were formally invited to apply for GLIAC membership.

GLIAC has made no secret that they plan to go to 16 (2 divisions of 8).

No announcement at this time, as to whether the 14 team league will split into 2 7-team divisions when ODU and LEC come aboard.

Look for the GLIAC to start surveying the landscape for members #15 and #16 (quite possibly two of the aspiring move-ups from NAIA American Mideast Conference (namely Cedarville, Central Ohio State, Malone, Mt. Vernon Nazarine, Notre Dame, Urbana, Ursuline, Walsh).

I was just thinking. Is the GLIAC possibly expanding so quickly to prevent the possible departure of their current Ohio schools (Ashland, Findlay and Tiffin) to the rumored Ohio Conference.

If all the possible NAIA teams would move up and the D2 Independents join them the Ohio Conference would be a very viable league (there are 13 teams here but odds are at least one wouldn't move):
Ashland
Findlay
Tiffin
Ohio Dominican
Lake Erie
Cedarville
Central State
Malone
Mt. Vernon Nazarene
Notre Dame
Urbana
Ursuline
Walsh

The GLIAC would be left with 9 teams:
Ferris State
Grand Valley State
Hillsdale
Lake Superior State
Michigan State
Northwood
Northern Michigan
Saginaw Valley State
Wayne State

Football would work in this situation assuming no one drops football. Even if Indianapolis would bolt for a GLVC football conference the GLIAC would still have 8 teams (no Lake Superior State). Enough for a conference but in a bad spot for getting non-conference games since they all are kind of landlocked in Michigan away from everyone else (especially Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech).

The Ohio Conference would have ten teams with Notre Dame adding football in 2010. (Cedarville, Mt. Vernon Nazarene and Ursuline don't have teams).

Findlay (D-II Bkball champs) and Ashland (good football) would never leave the GLIAC for the Ohio Conf. None of the other Ohio GLIACs would leave for an Ohio conference until it gained an auto-bid for bkball.

The writer makes the assumption that Indianapolis would leave the GLIAC in football to join a GLVC football conference, which I honestly don't see happening. That would be a huge step down in competition level, and considering UI is pretty competitive in the GLIAC, I think they would balk at doing so. The GLVC is also not in a position to force them to move. If they did, let's just say the GLIAC would find its 15th school pretty quickly.
