The Association of Division III Independents has evolved from… a unified voice to issues of common concern for independent institutions, to operating more like a conference.

This has nothing to do with realignment, and I'm sorry for that, but I just found out the AD3I exists, and I'm absolutely furious.

in·de·pen·dent (noun) \ˌin-də-ˈpen-dənt\
Someone or something that is not connected to others of the same kind.

ONCE YOU ASSOCIATE, YOU ARE NO LONGER INDEPENDENT.

You can't do that!

How can seven Athletics Directors who are probably smart men/women have the idea; seven University Presidents committed to educating young people agree to it; work together to form the organization, hire a commissioner, have seven SID/communications people with degrees in communications/journalism/English or similar field write press releases about it, and NO ONE REALIZE the name of their conference is a ridiculous oxy-moron of impossibility?

I wonder if all seven schools are associated with the Church of Athiests.

I guess the "Great West Conference" name wasn't available for purchase.

"Great West" ought to be available NOW (since it went out of existence several years ago, when Big Sky and Summit / MVFC
absorbed the remnants except for NJIT (now in the ASun)).
The Great West could hardly have been more of a catch-all, when a New jersey school was in The Great West !

Yeah, the AII is an oxy-moron (it's a "pseudo-conference").
I think the concept is that the AII may have some post-season tournaments etc.,
in order to allow members (independent schools) to earn shots at auto-bid to NAIA Championships.
AII probably also facilitates scheduling for schools that have just moved up to NAIA and not received a conference invitation.

I think AII currently consists of 28 member schools (6 Canadian + 22 U.S. schools).

More than that. All of the former Great South Athletic Conference schools are now part of the A3DI. The Great South gave up after the Spring 2016 championships. At least those schools have SOMETHING to play for. I would guess that the schools in the northeast also play in the occasional ECAC postseason tourney too.

Thanks for the update ! That Great South was a train wreck - the travel looked ridiculous for a legitimate conference (which I guess it never was).

I had Alfred State joining the Empire 8, but I guess that fell through...
