I think that any realignment scheme has to consider the great rivalries (so as to not break them up - or to get them together). I'd like to catalog the key college football rivalries. Anyway, I'll start (in no particular order):

Oklahoma-Oklahoma St
Oklahoma-Texas
Pitt-Penn St
Pitt-West Virginia
Michigan-ohio st
Auburn-'Bama
Florida-Florida St
Florida-Georgia
Florida-Tennessee
Florida St-Miami
Cal-Stanford
USC-Notre Dame

Have I missed any? Are there any on here that you would take off the list?

In the Big East, certainly Pitt's biggest rival is West Virginia. I know cause I grew up halfway between them.

Pitt & PSU don't play anymore, and many years that rivalry game was a mis-match, with Paterno's boys winning the vast majority.

Pitt and WVU have more typically been at about the same level.

Atlantic Coast:

Duke & North Carolina
North Carolina State & Wake Forest
Virginia & Virginia Tech
Boston College & Maryland
Clemson & Georgia Tech
Florida State & Miami

actually for the ACC, it would be Boston College & Miami. BC and Maryland don't really have a rivalry right now.

Quote:

Big East:

Connecticut & Rutgers
Cincinnati & Louisville
Pittsburgh & Syracuse
South Florida & West Virginia

Uh, dude, you don't know the Big East very well, do you? Let me help out a little: West Virginia and Pittsburgh have a huge rivalry that is played around Thanksgiving called the Backyard Brawl. This rivalry is the biggest for both schools. It's hard to say who is Syracuse's football rival right now is, but I do know that Syracuse and Connecticut have a big basketball rivalry.

Quote:

Big Ten:
Illinois & Northwestern
Indiana & Purdue
Michigan & Michigan State
Minnesota & Wisconsin
Ohio State & Penn State
Iowa & Anybody

Close, but not quite. Make that Michigan and Ohio State, Iowa and Minnesota, and Wisconsin vs Iowa. Penn State and Michigan State have a little bit of a rivalry between them.

Quote:

Big Twelve:
Baylor & Texas Tech
Texas & Texas A&M
Oklahoma & Oklahoma State
Colorado & Nebraska
Iowa State & Missouri
Kansas & Kansas State

only one missing here is Kansas vs Missouri.

Quote:

Conference USA:
Alabama at Birmingham & South Florida
Houston & Rice
Marshall & East Carolina
Memphis & Southern Mississippi
Southern Methodist & Texas at El Paso
Tulane & Tulsa

South Florida is now a part of the Big East. Maybe you're thinking UCF? Also, UAB has a rivalry with Southern Miss (as does Memphis), SMU has a rivalry with Rice (as does Houston), and Tulane has a rivalry with Southern Miss and Rice.

Quote:

Mid-American:
Akron & Kent State
Ball State & Northern Illinois
Bowling Green & Toledo
Buffalo & Central Michigan
Miami & Ohio
Eastern Michigan & Western Michigan

Mountain West:
Air Force & Colorado State
Brigham Young & Utah
Nevada at Las Vegas & San Diego State
New Mexico & Wyoming
TCU & Anybody

Pacific 10:
Arizona & Arizona State
California & Stanford
California at Los Angeles & Southern California
Oregon & Oregon State
Washington & Washington State

Southeastern:
Alabama & Auburn
Florida & Georgia
Kentucky & South Carolina
Mississippi & Mississippi State
Arkansas & Louisiana State
Tennessee & Vanderbilt

South Carolina fans will be quick to point out to you that they have no big rivalry with Kentucky. (I know this because I am a Georgia fan, and I've talked with South Carolina fans about this before. ;D ) Vanderbilt, however, does have a big rivalry with Kentucky. South Carolina's biggest SEC rival is Georgia. Kentucky's biggest rival is Tennessee.

Quote:

Sun Belt:
Florida Atlantic & Florida International
Louisiana at Lafayette & Louisiana at Monroe
Middle Tennessee & Western Kentucky
Troy & North Texas
Arkansas State & Arkansas at Little Rock (Basketball Only)
New Orleans & South Alabama (Basketball Only)

Change Troy & North Texas to Troy & Middle Tennessee. The two have a rivaly called the Battle for the Paladium or the "World's Biggest Toga Party." It's currently the only Sunbelt rivalry to have a trophy.

Quote:

Western Athletic:
Boise State & Idaho
Fresno State & San Jose State
Hawaii & Nevada
New Mexico State & Utah State
Louisiana Tech & Anybody

Fresno State also has a big rivalry with Hawaii. ;D

I cannot believe the everyone is overlooking the third Saturday on October! The Tennessee-Alabama series is one of the oldest and toughest series there is! Alabama-Auburn only beats it out because both schools are in the same state. The Tennessee-FL series is heated, but recent. It was an on and off series until the SEC split into divisions. If the Divisions had been North-South with FL and AR swapping divisons, TN would not have minded dropping FL from the traditional opponants list. The reason that the SEC has traditional opponants is to keep games like TN-AL and GA-Auburn.
