Ya'll might not know, but ECU and UNC-Wilmington had a heated rivalry in the CAA for years.....That is until ECU Joined Conference USA...The two teams haven't played each other in basketball since then...

To the best of my knowledge, ECU & UNCW still play each other in baseball, and that's a big rivalry too. Maybe ECU-UNCW will come back in basketball now that UNCC has bolted for the A10.

Idaho / Montana used to rock in 1-AA Bib Sky. But as long as Idaho remains 1-A thats done.

Idaho did play Montana not too long ago with the Vandals being I-A at the time. They played at Montana and I think they lost that one. That's probably the last time you'll see a I-A team play at a I-AA team. 99% of the time, it's the other way around.

If you'll look at the last 7 games in the series, Southern Miss did, in fact, win 5 of them.

Southern Miss is averaging over 28,000 this season.
The stadium was sold out for the game against Nebraska on a Thursday night on ESPN. The tickets for the Nebraska game were $40, considerably more than the normal ticket price of $25. If Southern Miss had SEC teams coming to an expanded MM Roberts, I'm almost certain they could fill it up.

Though I wish Ole Miss and Miss. State did play USM, sadly, the real reason is....what else? $$$$$$$$$$$$$

The Eagles' stadium seats a little under 35,000, while the stadiums in Oxford and Starkville seat better than 55,000. It's a Mexican standoff. Ole Miss and MSU don't want to play Southern Miss unless it's at home because they feel they would put most of the 35,000 in USM's stadium for a game in Hattiesburg anyway. USM's actual average attendence is much lower. But, USM doesn't want to play State or Ole Miss unless it's on a home and home basis. Being more of a traditionalist, I wish they'd just play anyway. Perhaps in Jackson? Doubtful. I'll just keep waiting.

USM beat Ole Miss five out of the last seven they played. That is why OM ran and hid.

MSU lost two games by forfiet to USM. Therefore USM leads the series 14-12-1. What really mattered was that USM destroyed MSU in the sevnenties and eighties. USM was 7-3 in the eighties against MSU and that led to MSU running and hiding. What was funny is they won the last two games after they chose to run.

Most of the UM/MSU folks like to leave out alot of details. Like the fact that USM was established in 1912 and didn't turn Div I-A until 1964. We didn't join a FB conference until the 1990's.

Both UM/MSU have been around since the late 1800's and had the good fortune to be in the SEC. For decades they both dominated the state politically. However, that is changing and USM is now the states' largest university. USM has also added a four year gulf coast campus and the has possibility of a USM Medical School on the coast (at the site of the VA).

USM is on the rise and they know it. Interestingly, both our HC and AD have told the UM/MSU folks that we'll be glad to play them next at their place and the winner gets to pick the next site. Hmmm, you tell me who is chicken?

Not to detract from the Mississippi football lesson, but I know we miss NC State vs. S. Carolina and N. Carolina vs. S. Carolina. I am happy to get the Va. Tech rivalry again.

For the record, I wouldn't want to play So. Miss even in Raleigh. The All-American Bowl in 1990 when Brett Favre lit us up, was proof enough, and we were fortunate to get the W. I think USM will be the dominate team in the new CUSA.

Now, that would be great. You must understand I WANT to see this rivalry played. When I was a kid I used to go to a lot of games with my Dad, and yes, I do remember those last two games that State won. And while you may be partly right, the $$$$$ issue is the majority of the reason not the other way around. It is some of both maybe. Anyway, if we in the state could see an expanded MM Roberts and Ole Miss and State still refused to work in USM every few years (or every year - here's to hoping), then we can say they're "scared." Until recently, MSU had enjoyed a decade of success and Ole Miss has had something like 7 or 8 winning SEC playing teams in a row. I don't think they've been "scared" to play USM when they may well have each beaten USM 6-8 times in the last decade if they'd kept playing.

One of my best friends is a die hard Eagle fan (And I admit they're number 3 on my top 5 favorite list - after guess who? I am very loyal to the state) and I remember him declaring in 1992 that USM would be a national top 10 powerhouse year in and year out in five years. That would've been 1997. I'm still waiting. It seems to me that some USM fans have a Napoleon complex and can't understand that MSU/OM reluctance to play goes far beyond the field. As I said, it is a Mexican standoff. And you see with posts such as this what a great rivarly it would be if we could get it renewed.

My loyalities in this order:
#1 Miss. State (sigh)
#2 Ole Miss (can't wait for LSU)
#3 USM
#4 LSU (if they get by Ole Miss, I'll be their biggest fan...my loyalties mean I want Ole Miss to win the West, but if they don't, then I want to see LSU-OU in the sugar bowl)
#5 Memphis (until 10 years ago it was Alabama who is now#6, but I had a good friend from Memphis and I caught his enthusiasm)

I was listening to a radio show last night and the guys were debating who the Sugar Bowl would want...who would bring more fans....Ohio State or USC............any Tiger Fan knows who'll bring the most fans to the Sugar Bowl to play Oklahoma...they'll be hanging from the rafters.

My 2003 "GREAT SATAN" list (this changes from year to year) of teams I want to see lose no matter who they play and in this order:

#1 Miami, Fla. (Who else could have support 4 miles wide and an inch deep? They have the permanent #1 spot)
#2 BYU (this position is also permanent)
#3 Auburn (Mississippians don't like Tubberville, and I'm being generous with my words)
#4 Texas A&M (the coach - Bama was my #6 favorite remember)
#5 Nebraska (no particular reason - it's just nice to see someone else win for a change)

#3-#5 can change from year to year as my "wrath" against them subsides

DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE A PERSONAL "GREAT SATAN" LIST?

Idaho-Montana rivalry won't happen past this year because of the 5 I-A home games requirement. It is a good rivalry.

I also miss the Boise State rivalry. We still play them, but it was so much better when we were in the same league. The game meant something... The talent gap has grown quite a bit between the schools (mainly because of conferences, sunbelt vs. WAC). It is always a great game, hard hitting and fun. It was more fun when it meant something in the standings...

Like the Bronco-Vandal rivalry, one that miss here in the South has suffered due to a widened gap between the teams. LSU-Tulane not only is no longer a conference game, but the competitiveness is more or less gone. LSU has won the last 14, and won 37 of the last 41. While that's not near as bad as Idaho-Boise State is disappointing to see a rivalry get lost in the dog eat dog of the changing college football world.

The bad thing is that as long as teams feel they have to pad the schedule with cupcakes, you will see few cross-sectional rivalries played, especially with most conferences playing 8 games and especially if a team like SC has an instate non-conference rival (Clemson).

This could be one good thing to come from the new I-A requirements. It would seem that with many teams having to play a lot more home and homes against other mid-majors in order to insure 5 I-A home games, then there will be less "cupcakes" to go around (not that all or even most mid-majors are cupcakes). This may "force" big schools to find other non-conference games....agianst each other. I'm all for it. I oppose a playoff and to those who would say we should decide the championship on the field, I say...I agree...that's what the season is for...play real non-conference games.

im really pleased with all of the interest in uncw. glad to be able to provide info. anyways, ecu and uncw did play each other in baseball this year. ecu is very good and nationally respected, and uncw is slowly building a great program, just like they are in basketball. uncw beat ecu both times last year both home and away which makes me wonder if they will continue to play us, i hope that they do because its fun to play them and its a competitive rivalry.

as for brett blizzard, he is on a pro team in italy. after not getting drafted, brett took the overseas option and hopefully can one day get into the nba from there. he is a really nice guy and a class act, one of the good guys in the sport.

How about some conference rivals that used to play each other every year and don't get to play each other like they used to due to expansion?

I can name a few:

All the Big 10....for a while there they played a round robin each season

Ole Miss - Tennessee
Miss. State - Florida
Ole Miss - Georgia
Alabama - Vanderbilt
Auburn - Florida
LSU - Kentucky

I don't know about some other conferences, but the ACC is about to join these ranks
