This thread is similar to the dream thread, but without all the fantasy conferences.

Wouldn't it be nice if ...TV revenue for OOC games were split 50-50 without the conferences getting a cut. I would also assume that the pay-per- view contracts would be based on how many people signed up. I.e. the big schools would get the money for their fans and the mid-major would get the money for theirs. Good mid-majors would be able to get home-and-home series with top 25 teams since they would likely be televised.
One thing fans of mid-majors tend to "forget" in the BCS arguments is economics. Why should a UT want to play a home and home against Boise State when they can play one against UCLA? Pay per-view MIGHT be a way around this. Tennessee does pretty well on their pay per-view deal on home games. If they could get a deal on an away game, they might be more willing to play a small venue away game. They (TN) already have away games at Marshal and Memphis, although Memphis is wanting to back out. (Tulane-Saban syndrome)

Comments? What ifs...?

One catch is the contractual arrangements between schools, conferences, the NCAA and affiliated partners (merchandise, tickets, etc.) For the immediate future, (IMO) few schools could pull off their own pay-per-view, especially for games that would otherwise not be televised, a pay-per-view broadcast would not bring in as much $ after costs, and may also reduce ticket sales. However, given the shape of cable and satellite companies and more regional or local productions, it seems to me that before long conferences will have their own networks and/or full media operations. Thus, in lieu of pay-per view you might have the option of subscribing to the Big 10 channel, or an SEC-only version of GamePlan.

I don't know the cost of transmitting the signal back to the 'away' school. Upgrading the facilities in order to broadcast is a factor, but it is not nearly as big as the transmission problem. If using the fiber optic system will work, then the small schools have at least something to offer. They can say that if BIG school schedules them home and home, and their (small school's home) game is not picked up by the networks, they will provide the feed to the BIG school. The Big school could then sell the pay per-view rights to their local cable networks. Pay per-view would be popular for an away game, and the extra money would be like a bigger payout.
