KingCal, your Grid is very informative and contains a lot of facts on possible scenarios for expansion.

The Atlantic 10 expansion with football could possibly become more than a long shot if the ACC expands with Syracuse and BC.

Big East basektball is the primary reason that the Atlantic 10 originally failed as a major conference. Actually the hybrid conference concept started by the preecessor to the Atlantic 10, the Eastern 8, probably has more to do with the failure of eastern football. The Eastern 8 was in existance before either the BE or Atlantic 10.

If the old Eastern 8 had expanded with all sports including football, the east may be in better position to expand.

Syracuse orginially did not want to join the Eastern 8 and help form the present day Big East. Both of these scenarios created the complicated Big East hybrid conference that is not working today.

With the BE basketball conference dominating the eastern TV markets with big city basketball schools, the Atlantic 10 could never establish it self. This lead to Penn State joining the Big 10 to improve all sports especially basketball.

With Syracuse and Boston College out of the TV grid of the BE basketball, a new version of the Atlantic 10 for all sports could soon dominate the eastern TV markets. Even with Notre Dame aligning with the BE basketball schools, the conference will never be able to dominate the eastern markers again. Syracuse, Boston, and eventually Pittsburgh markets will severly impact the BE basketball TV marketing ability to dominate the east. Additionally the ACC intrusion into NY and Boston would further hurt the BE bb TV markets.

If the Pac 10 and Big 10 deside to keep round robin and remain at 10 or 11 members, Penn State may rejoin the Atlantic 10. This time around would not be facing TV domination of the eastern basketball schools. Yes the ACC would be present, however, the ACC is not going to carry the entire east with Syacuse and BC. This is a big hole in the estimates for all the money they are predicting. Will get to that point latter.

1. UMass upgrades for football
2. UConn replaces Rhode Island with div 1 football
3. Penn State returns
4. Rutgers returns
5. WVU returns
6. Va Tech replaces orginial member George Wash
7. Pitt finally is united again with PSU
8. Temple has remained in waiting
9. Marshall - Delaware could work with upgrade to 1A
10. Louisville - Maryland would be great

It would be worth it to see Penn State return and finally see the Atlantic 10 rise above the Big East in all sports. If the Atlantic 10 could get Penn State, the ACC additions with BC and Syracuse could really back fire and ACC football expansion in the east could become a major disater for football. The basketball side of Syracuse and BC would not falter and may improve in the ACC, however, both will not dominate the east as the ACC is predicating for either football or basketball.

The Atlantic 10 may be able to accomplish this feat without Penn State. The Atlantic 10 could create future problems with the ACC expansion into the eastern TV markets especially if the Atlantic 10 keeps BCS status.

Including all these state schools have a lot of US Senators to go to bat to keep the BCS bid in tack for eastern div 1 football schools. The state of Virginia is already showing support for Va Tech.

My comment is I question how only a couple of years of football success has moved Marshall up so far? They were the MAC champion and barely beat a 6-5 ECU team that was up on them by 30 pts?

ECU has had a couple of down years but consider this:
1) In one of the fastest growing states in the nation
2) Invested over $46 Million in the past 6 years in facilities
3) Have quality wins in the past 10 years = 2 straight over Miam, 2 over WVU, 2 over Syracuse.
3) Wins over ACC, PAC 10, BIG 12, BE, SEC
4) Has 3 home games OVER 50k attendance

Memphis hasnt had a winning season in200yrs, Cincy just now is getting to .500.

I will go take my meds now.

I think ECU is a good mid-major football program. They have had a couple of good wins. But losing to Duke (which had lost 22 in a row before beating ECU) and Wake Forest and UAB every year seems to hurt this program. In addition, their basketball program is the doormat of the C-USA and always finished last when they were in the Colonial Conference.

Based upon the grid, I think the best alignments to be:

(C-USA)
UAB, Tulane, Memphis, Houston, TCU, So Miss, ECU, USF

(New Big East)
Va Tech, WVU, Marshall, Temple, UConn, Louisville, Cincy, Rutgers

(New League)
WEST - Xavier, Dayton, Marquette, DePaul, St. Louis, Duquesne
EAST - St. John's, G'town, Providence, Seton Hall, St. Joe's, LaSalle

(New Colonial)
NORTH - UMass, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, N'eastern, Hofstra
SOUTH - Richmond, James Madison, Wm & Mary, Appalachian St, Delaware, Towson St

(New Atlantic 10 or 8)
George Mason, George Washington, Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion, UNCW, Charlotte, Charleston, Georgia St

Wow, would Tulane really drop football? They were a founding member of the SEC have been playing it forever, it seems. That would be a horrible shame, probably the biggest loss of a program in a long time.

KingCal, nice grid. It would only take a little effort to update with the July 1 developments.

I have my own grid. Seeing as UMass is already struggling with paying for a I-AA program, don't look for them to move up.

I-A Football:
ACC: Gets either Vanderbilt or Goergia, which are both in talks with them accoridng to my sources

Big 12: gets Arkansas

SEC: Gets Southern Miss and Memphis

Big East: Gets Marshall, East Carolina, Louisville, Cincy along with UConn coming in

Sun Belt: Gets Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Troy St,
UAB, Houston, Tulane and S. Florida

CUSA - Dissolves

The outliers go to the Moutain West



I-AA football then goes through a major facelift which is needed
Southern: Furman, Elon, Wofford, VMI, Citadel, Samford, Hampton, William & Mary, Towson, Coastal Carolina, Davidson

CAA: Delaware, App State, Gerogia Southern, James Madison, Villanova, UTC, Tenn Tech, Eastern Kentucky, Western Kentucky, NC A&T, SC State

MEAC: Loses A&T, SCSU, Hampton but picks up Winston-Salem St, NC Central and Savannah St

Gateway: Picks up Eastern illinois and Murry State

OVC: Dissolves as a football league

Big South: Picks up OVC football remnants along with current members

A-10: Then gets filled Richmond and the rest of the NE football schools including Georgetown
Patriot: Remains the same only losing Georgetown and Towson

Now to basketball:
This would acuse the formation of new conferences on the east...

Big South becomes a public school basketball confernce: College of Charleston, Winthrop, Radford, UNCA, ETSU, Georgia St, Charlotte, UNCW, VCU, ODU, Georgia Mason, UNCG

A-Sun becomes a private school conference: High Point, Campbell, Lipscomb, Mercer, Stetson, Birmingham Southern, Belmont, Longwood, and the likes.

New Basketball Conf: Xavier, Dayton, Marquette, DePaul, St. Louis, Duquesne, St. John's, Providence, Seton Hall, St. Joe's, LaSalle



Granted, none of this would happen, but this would tend to align schools to better serve each other than have a ton of leagues fighting over being public vs private, or big vs small, or basketball vs football.TEXTTEXT

Couple 'o questions about the gird:

1) Why do you even have MTSU considered for the WAC? They are way out of the WAC footprint. UNT, ASU or UL-L would be more likely candidates, right?

2) What reasoning do you have for saying that the Cajuns won't make the 2005 criteria?
