Heard David Stern on ESPN Radio yesterday saying that, indeed, it will be 6 divisions, 5 teams each.

I messed around yesterday (hadn't gone to this thread until just now) and came up with exactly what Explorers came up with. It makes plenty of sense. Therefore, the NBA won't use it... oops, 'scuse me, I channeled Pete Rozelle there.

WBYeager, I love that scheduling format, but I would ditch the 2 extra games so the total can be 80.

As for the "non-division, intra-conference" format, its oppositions will rotate in a two-year rotation:

What do you guys think of Birmingham getting an NBA team one day?

Doubtful. Birmingham killed the CBA Bandits (previously the Pensacola Tornados) with rousing efficiency. Not sure how the ABA Birmingham Magic did this year.

* IF * Birmingham built a domed stadium to replace the ailing Legion Field and were willing to make sufficient revenue concessions for an NBA team, then things will be different. The Atlanta Hawks would not be happy if that happened, unless if they intend on moving to Birmingham.

Also, Birmingham would have to leapfrog all of this formidable competition: Louisville, Jacksonville, Hartford, St. Louis, Nashville, San Diego, Cincinnati, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Kansas City, etc.

Also add the obvious Oklahoma City, current home of the NOK Hornets. + Virginia Beach-Norfolk, Las Vegas, Rochester (if not Buffalo), Providence (if not Hartford), Richmond (if not Virginia Beach-Norfolk), Tampa (though too close to Orlando perhaps), Grand Rapids, and maybe Albany and Dayton but may be pushing it for NBA markets. Tucson, Fresno and Tulsa are a bit too small and a little too much of college markets. Austin may be too close to San Antonio and not quite big enough with UT in town. Its sorda like Columbus, OH in a way, but a bit more closer to San Antonio than what Columbus is to Cleveland and Cincy. Raliegh-Durham, though the home of the Carolina Hurricanes NHL team has too much college and too close to Charlotte. Greensboro-Winston--Salem-High Point has a similar situation. Honolulu is too far away and Hawaii lacks population though Oahu Island has 900K.

It may happen but it'll depend on the NBA staff.

Oklahoma City has proven that they can handle an NBA team (at least until the newness wears off barring they come up with a player like a Chris Paul-type), so I think they'll be first in line to get an expansion team. Teams have flirted with moving to Louisville in the past few years, however U of L managed to block that from happening. I think a Hawaii franchise is just too far away and would add too much to travel costs to be feasable (most sports leagues with a Hawaii team have either tanked or have had the Hawaii franchise fold). The NBA also seems to have kind of a dubious history with some of the cities mentioned (especially ones that formerly had NBA franchises, ala Rochester, Syracuse, Cincinnati, etc). Syracuse and Cincinnati would probably face stiff protest from SU, UC, and Xavier (much like what happened in Louisville), so they're probably not on the list. I honestly see OkC and Vegas (after working on a deal with the gaming industry to avoid it getting mixed in with the team) getting the expansion teams, with either Memphis or New Orleans moving to the Eastern Conference to form 2 4-division conferences, much like the NFL. Now an interesting topic would be to see if the Hornets can manage to stay in New Orleans after they move back (if i remember correctly, there wasn't much interest to begin with, though having Chris Paul might help that out). If they left, there are likely candidates as metioned above (Virginia (VB-N or Richmond), Hartford-Providence, Buffalo, Columbus), as well as San Diego. IMO, Grand Rapids, Albany, and Dayton are too small of markets to have an NBA base, though Dayton could be lumped in with Columbus.

Kansas City will be on the NBA's radar with the new Sprint Center opening up. Also it helps with AEG is part owner in it.
