WSSU is in the middle of a transition to D-1.However they claim that they need a student athletic fee increase to make the move. The UNC BOG meets next week,2-13-09, to vote on this measure with the outcome unsure.Link to article at http://www2.journalnow.com/content/2009 ... y-bid/news

While having the CIAA ready to take them back so quickly may help them get back into D-II quicker, having gone that long to get to D-I then having to go back would really have to hurt. But they also have waived raising tuition and any other fees to get this passed, so that does have to work in their favor. Yes, their athletic fees would be the highest in the state, but realistically they're also in line (or even below) with the total increases for the rest of the state schools.

Well, I can see the logic behind it with the lack of fundraising, but the timing definitely raises some eyebrows. It seems like either they're looking for someone who can fundraise better to convince the UNC board that they're not relying on just the increase, or they're already going into the vote with a defeatist mindset. As far as their possible candidates, it does sound like they're trying to get someone in who can connect with the older alums, so this could end up being their plan B after all. Tomorrow will give us a much clearer view of what's going on.

Tarkiokid, thanks for the post.Agree that we should know more after the UNC BOG vote tomorrow.
Apparently there are precedents for starting the D-1 transition and then going back to D-2.Blog article discussing the WSSU situation at http://www.blackvoices.com/blogs/2009/0 ... on-i-drive

NC Central's move was different than this is now, considering they had been there for a good amount of time before dropping back down. Florida A&M's move was also a head-scratcher, I guess they thought they could sneak into the Big East or C-USA, then once they realized all they could get was the Sun Belt (who was on much less stable ground at the time), they realized they were better off as a I-AA.

You also have to consider that there was no ESPN, no Fox Sports, and not nearly as much money in March Madness as there is now, which has played a pretty good part of widening the gap between D-I and D-II in the past nearly-30 years. Really I-AA was considered like D-II is now, because back then they also didn't have autobids for every conference to March Madness.

Looks like UNC BOG has refused to increase WSSU athletic student fees but granted them a tuition increase. Unclear what this will do to WSSU D-1 situation.Link at http://www2.journalnow.com/content/2009 ... -increases
