The solution for the Big Ten is so simple: work with Penn St. on an upgrade but ALSO invite Notre Dame as an associate member (and get a commitment before announcing the new league). Notre Dame would likely jump on the opportunity to be in a conference with such limited travel, not to mention the revenue cut they'd get from the B10 Network for the single sport...it would likely be more than they get now.

Michigan
Michigan St.
Ohio St.
Wisconsin
Minnesota
* Notre Dame
Penn St.

More than likely it appears that UNO might be moving to the WCHA, UAH is applying to the CCHA and had a site visit recently by the CCHA.

Penn State does not have a hockey team and from what I have been told is no where close to aquiring one.
The fans have been talking about a Big Ten Hockey conference for years and yet there has been no movement towards starting one.

PSU does have a hockey team. Granted they are part of ACHA (club) Division 1 (same with Illinois) though. PSU pretty much dominated ACHA from the mid 90s - 2005.

One reason (and it probably isn't the MAIN reason) is that there aren't enough teams for the Big 10 to sponsor hockey. You need at least 6 I think (?). Once the Big 10 actually has 6 teams playing ice hockey, the conversation changes.

Quinn,Goon,and Panther,thanks for the posts.

It should be interesting to see how much additional pressure the BTN ends up applying to the previously established Big Ten Hockey League movement.

Also, blog article reporting that UAF is also apparently exploring the possibility of joining the WCHA.Link at http://uaafan.blogspot.com/2009/06/ua-n ... -move.html

Article with update regarding MSUM attempt to start NCAA D-1 hockey program.
Due to timing, they "may" have to apply to the CCHA instead of the WCHA as they originally had planned.Link at http://www.wday.com/event/article/id/21842/group/home

Article out of Fairbanks with comments from UAF and UAA AD's regarding WCHA expansion.Apparently UNO is currently the primary WCHA expansion target to team up with Bemidji. However,if UNO declines an invite,UAF would be interested in that spot.UAA apparently is in favor of a UAF WCHA invite.
Looks like the WCHA would like to resolve expansion situation by this August,if possible.
