I wonder if CUSA makes a play for the leftovers since their geography might be a better fit. Especially if UCF were gone.

CUSA could look like:

Marshall, UAB, Memphis, USM, Tulane, Houston, Rice
kansas, Kansas St., Iowa St., Tulsa, Baylor, SMU, UTEP

Or what is the Big12-4 made a play to invite some select MWC, CUSA and Big East schools?

Kansas, Kansas St., Iowa St., Louisville, Cincy, WVU
Colorado St., Utah, BYU, UNLV, New Mexico, UTEP

Perhaps, FSA. Could mean nothing more than BSU gives the MWC the BCS autobid. If the situations are right, the MWC could still goto 12 or 14.

Could also mean:
1) MWC is preparing to lose Utah (no Texas moves to P10)
2) Texas A&M goes to SEC and Kansas to Pac-10 as #16 (MWC would put BSU at top over choices KSU, Baylor, Iowa St)
3) B12 (5) join with Big East schools
4) simply that BSU is the best school for the conference, regardless of what happens and that IF they can get Kansas/KSU, they'd simply expand to 12...if they wanted Baylor and Houston to grab the Texas market, they can goto 14.

I think Boise State would be a great fit in the MWC. The conference actually decided to stick with geography for once, and hopefully it will pay off.

It's even more interesting given that BSU beat MWC member TCU in the Fiesta Bowl earlier this year, so you could say it was something of a tune-up for joining the MWC. And so far, every MWC member, current and future, once was in the WAC.

I'm working the phones today, trying to get some updates on the brewing Big 12 scenario. Looks like they might remain united. The real "huh" is the rumor that BYU and Air Force could be in play to expand to 12. Question is why would Texas, etc, stay if it means more mouths to feed (at 12). At 10, Texas makes more money. At 12, and losing Nebraska and Colorado, it's a worse conference. But ESPN is willing to overpay to keep the Pac-10/Fox from creating a TV network WITH Texas, Oklahoma.

So now it looks like the biggest questions are:

1. Does the Pac 10 take away Utah from the MWC, forming the Pac 12 (seems likely)?
2. Does the MWC stay at 9 with Boise replacing Utah, or do they go to 10 or 12? Do schools like Houston, UTEP, Tulsa, SMU, Fresno State, Nevada make sense or not at this time?

There might be a chance that Utah will decline a Pac 10 invite. If the Mountain West is all but guaranteed a BCS auto bid they might stay were they have a better chance of getting to the BCS game. I think the Pac 10 might be stuck with a team they might not want maybe like UNLV or something.

To reiterate, the only reason the Pac-10 considered expanding to 16 schools was to get Texas. They are the only school that would justify financially making such a move. There is no reason for anyone to think that the Pac-10 would expand beyond 12 in the near future, as there are no candidates that would justify it (i.e. make the other 12 members money).

As for Utah, they will in no way pass on a Pac-10 invite. Not a chance. Colorado joined the Pac-10, leaving the Big 12. If the Pac-10 said to Utah that if you join, you can't ever play BYU again in OOC...and Utah would still join the Pac-10. The only thing that would stop Utah from joining the Pac-10 would be to not get an invite. And all signs point to that happening.

If Utah PASSED on an invite to the Pac-10, I'd eat my hat.

New Mexico could go with TCU to formed the new SWC with other Texas schools.

Now the teams that could replaced the schools and add more teams to get the conference up to 12. La. Tech could also joined the new SWC from the WAC.

Montana
UNR
Fresno State
Cal.-Davis
Cal.-Irvine if they add football as well which would bring the Los Angelas market.
Hawaii
San Jose State (I added them because their football team in some years very good, but in others as bad.)

David, discussing Utah REJECTING a Pac-10 offer is like saying that UTEP in CUSA would pass on a Big 12 invite. Why would a school that wants to be in the Pac-10, has made it clear they want in the Pac-10, would love to be in a conference with the CA schools and Colorado, now back out to make less money in the MWC? They wouldn't. The Pac-10 is a BCS conference and will always be. The MWC MIGHT be at some point, perhaps soon. But NO school is going to turn down that BCS lock as well as a potential $15 million boost (MWC schools make $1.5 million, Pac-12 expected to near $17 million within 4 years).

And while losing Utah might hurt the MWC, they are still in a better situation with Boise St. joining, a huge boost.

So the idea of current MWC schools like New Mexico leaving for a weaker conference (your blend of CUSA schools) is off base.

And the MWC would have no reason to add FCS schools like Cal Poly and UC Davis...which was D2 not long ago.

There's a great thread called the "Dream Conferences for Fun" thread. Your idea is a very interesting one that is certainly a great addition to that thread. But for realistic MWC scenarios, it's a bit of a stetch. You should report it over on the DCforFun thread as I'm sure it would gain some interest.

If Utah is joining, BYU fans will probably want the Cougars in the Pac-10 as well. Which leaves the Mountain West with 8 schools. If Hawaii joins the Pac-10 to bring that conference to 14, then Fresno State would probably join the MWC.
