The case is starting to become a little iffy. While Boise State will join in 2011, at the same time, Utah will leave for the Pac-10. Had the latter not occurred, their 2008-10 results would have counted towards the MWC's overall record to help them get a BCS autobid. At least that's how I see it.

This week's Coaches poll at http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ ... atpoll.htm

Not even counting Utah, the MWC plus new WAC recruits are fairly represented in the top 25 poll. What's going on with the ACC and Big East?

Thanks
Freaked

Indeed, freaked.

I've said it before, I'll say it again:

Losing Utah was tough since they were consistent. But the MWC replaced it's top school with one even BETTER than Utah in Boise St.

Losing BYU hurts too. But TCU had surpassed them in football power of late. And to "what I've said before" it's simply that all the MWC needed was for a single school to have any level of success that could get them on the radar. The MWC needs only 1 slight impact school to make it's case. Nevada is doing it thus far this year, Fresno not far behind. If ANY of the current/future MWC schools can make it in the top 30, they've made the case for a BCS spot...especially if Boise and TCU are in the top 10.

The ACC is continuing its pattern of parity to a degree. Miami is presently #17, and FSU, NC State, Clemson, and VPI, were among others receiving votes. It's near mid-season, so much could change in October and November.

The BE, on the other hand, not having a championship game, and no ranked school presently in the top 25, plus having fewer schools to vie, has considerably greater hurdle to showcase a lofty, BCS entry.

Apparently, UCLA has Texas' number when it comes to playing in Austin.

Some over-rating stuff going on IMO.

Almost all college coaches agree that it is silly to have pre-season rankings, or even attempt to rank the teams before they play several (maybe 5) games.

As much as we hate the BCS, the BCS rankings don't commence until most teams have about 5 games under their belt.

Pre-season rankings are done, so that magazines can be published in July and August.
You can project that a team like 2010 Boise State should be good, since they are returning the vast majority of starters off a team that went undefeated, and their schedule is not particularly demanding.

One could guess that a lot of people would miss the boat on a team like Texas, who loses numerous seniors including the most important player on the team (the starting quarterback), who is now replaced by someone with relatively little playing time. Almost all players improve markedly during their playing years in college, but projecting the performance of a bunch of under-classmen suddenly thrust into the lime-light is a pure crap-shoot.

Right now Texas and Penn State (to name just 2 perrenial powers) are going through a rebuilding phase.

Writers that picked them to be in the pre-season Top Ten simply ignored the fact that they played some tough early games and were trying to get by with some unseasoned players.

Sure will be. Figure that there is a benefit for MWC being included. 1) it provides access to a newly united region of the country...there are now only 4 total FBs schools in the entire region not in either the P10 or MWC. 2) with the Big East having some troubles with a 4 loss Uconn team in (while better programs this year like BSU and Nevada aren't) there is something to say about balancing the field. Sure, most years the big dogs will still get 2 in (Big Ten, SEC)...and it should be that way most years. But this year, had BSU not lost to Nevada, TCU would have been out in favor of 2 loss Arkansas. Ouch.

Of course, I favor adding the Cotton Bowl as the 5th BCS game other than the championship. Give the Big 12 the tie-in, give the Fiesta to the MWC and the MWC an AQ. Would also free up another single BCS spot that would likely go to a 2nd Big Ten, SEC, P10 or B12 team. So most years, you'd have:

SEC: 2 teams
Big Ten: 2 teams
Big 12: 2 teams
Pac-10: 2 teams
ACC: 1 team
Big East: 1 team
MWC: 1 team
At-large: 1 team

Might also be worth lifting the (2) team max per conference of that happened. There would be years when no at-large now would be in the top 12, no need to punish a top 12 school.
