Does anybody have any thoughts regarding whether UNC-Wilmington (no football) would be happier in a southern-based conference (like perhaps the SoCon)
instead of being something of an out-lier in the CAA ?

CAA seems to be looking at C.Carolina and Liberty so those schools are close to UNCW. CCU is south of them.

Stony Brook still appears high on the list, so it will be interesting.

You've got many paths for the CAA:
1) regroup with available members such as Stony Brook and Coastal to get football to 6 members to keep sponsorship, then add 2 more schools for overall support. BU is a target, since it means making use of that one trip to NU each year. Charleston, Davidson, etc, are others on the wish list.

2) More bold: protect football with AE raid bring in SB, UNH and Maine with BU for #12. 7 all-sports football and 12 overall.

3) more bold: CAA can go after 4 SoCon schools, cripple that conference. Ideally, App St, GA Southern. Davidson and Charleston. Problem is those 2 football schools are eyeing FBS.

4) drop football, salvage hoops: Rather than go for football schools just to sponsor football, go for the 4 best hoops programs they can get. Football will be fine: you'd have 4 CAA schools, 1 BE, 1 A10, 2 Ae schools. So they lose a voting right on NCAA matters, so be it. MVFC has 5 members and does well at FCS. So you lose the vote, so be it. If the best 4 programs available don't' have football, go for them anyways. So maybe that means BU, Charleston, Davidson and Stony Brook. It will still bring some stability and ensure that even if JMU and UD leave for FBS one day, it won't matter...can just swap in 2 new schools.


For the Socon, it will be interesting.

They risk losing 2 football schools to FBS and they'd then look elsewhere. So who knows: if the CAA loses ODU too, and JMU and UD are flight risks for the future, maybe you see a school like W&M consider the SoCon. Maybe JMU too to keep the 2 VA schools together.

If they lose Charleston/Davidson to CAA, then they can slot in Coastal for one and find another member like a Liberty.


So the SoCon will be fine, they have the Big South to raid if the CAA raids them.
