Article out of Bangor with report that NAIA Sunrise conference has disbanded with one school,Fisher College remaining in the NAIA but shifting to the AMC and the other league schools leaving the NAIA for the USCAA.Unclear on how many other NAIA schools will be leaving for the USCAA.Link at http://bangordailynews.com/2011/06/17/s ... ssociation

Fisher leaving for the AMC which will have 5 schools including them, 3 of which applied to D-II. How is that a conference?

I didn't think a conference could be in worse shape than the Dakota Athletic Conference but it looks like the AMC has managed to do it.

Is this a done deal, or just a threat to the NAIA management ?

Agree Fisher to the AMC is silly, however, they are the only other Northeastern "conference" in NAIA (although probably next to disband...).

I list some other teams in the Sunrise Athletic Conference: Hesser (NH), Briarcliff (NY), SUNY Tech - Delhi (NY), and SUNY - Environmental Science and Forestry (NY).
Wazzup with these guys ? Or were they planning on joining, but hadn't done so yet ?

Tute, you ask question that only you and I care about and only you or I can answer :D

AMC is delusional thinking that they are a real conf. they still include the transition schools hoping they'll go back to the NAIA

SUNY-Delhi is a JUCO that has partial NAIA membership

Briarcliffe applied to D-II, withdrew because of accreditation problems (no men's basketball either), now are USCAA

SUNY-ESF is another USCAA school w/o men's basketball

Hesser dropped sports

With the addition of Fisher I have 8 members in the American Mideast Conference (AMeC) for 2011-12, which is enough for a conference. (Houghton moves to D3 Empire 8 Conference in 2012 & Walsh to D2 in 2013. Wash agreed to stay in AMeC for 2011-12.)

This move at least helps Fisher fill schedules and gives their student athletes the opportunity to vie for conference championships and awards. It also keeps them in closer conversation with other regional NAIA schools in the same boat, i.e. soon to be without a conference.

Seems like a decent stop-gap measure to me.

Yeah in 2012 they'll be dead. 6 schools but one of the 6 is a all girls school. So none of the mens teams would count as being in a conf. unless there's a waiver.

Fresno _

SOMEBODY has to care !!!! You have better sources than I, that's clear.
I just have a big spreadsheet and track the movements of D-1, D-2, D-3 and NAIA.

NAIA just continues to shrink, doesn't it ?
The only think sustaining it, is that the NCAA is limiting the flow of refugees....

At this point, anywhere north or east of Pittsburgh (Carlow, Point Park) has no local NAIA conference anymore.

A few years ago, the NCAA and NAIA had some discussions...
Perhaps the NAIA is starting to sense the futility of their current situation.
NAIA - "How about a merger ?"
NCAA - "What's in it for us ? In another 15 years, everyone in NAIA will be gone anyway. We don't want to be deluged with crappy applications...."

I know the NAIA in the Northeast is in shambles BUT here in the Midwest, its still very vibrant and alive. I don't see the NAIA (an organization that has bee around since the 20's) simply going away. But it is a little disconcerting to think that the coasts are where the NAIA is hurting the most and those are also the areas that have the "most schools" of this size.

How about starting a USCAA speadsheet? That would help me keep up. (BTW...Fresno, do you have these spreadsheets posted online somewhere?)

I have a hand written notebook with ever D-I, D-II, D-III, NAIA, USCAA, NCCAA, CIS, school/conf. (that have mens bball) I also have it with all the fb conf.

USCAA is really just a list of schools, the only ones that are in a conf are the PSU-XXX and another, but the USCAA just lists the standing w/o conf. plus some conf. have JUCOs in them that I have to weed out. NCCAA has 44 non dual and USCAA 43. I'm on vacation so I don't have the book w/ me.

NAIA membership not yet official

Quote:
CCGA was offered [SSAC] membership beginning in the Fall 2012 contingent upon their acceptance into the NAIA.

"We have submitted our complete application packet to the NAIA. After discussion with the NAIA's membership chair, the campus visit from the NAIA is scheduled for Wednesday, August 17. After the visit, we anticipate having a decision from the NAIA by the end of September 2011." [Dr. William Carlton, College of Coastal Georgia (CCGA) Director of Athletics]

I know but it's just a formality. They were already offered an invite to an NAIA conf. The NAIA is not known for being big sticklers for rules when it comes to inviting members. Be accredited and the new rule of having 6 sports.
