Official UT-Arlington release...

Quote:
Arlington, Texas (July 14, 2011) -- The University of Texas at Arlington announced today that it has accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) starting on July 1, 2012.

"We are honored to join the Western Athletic Conference," UT Arlington president James D. Spaniolo said. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that advances the interests of our university and positions our athletics programs to compete at a higher level. It is clear recognition of the growing prominence of UT Arlington."

"This day will long be remembered at UTA," athletic director Pete Carlon said. "We are excited to make the jump into the WAC and into a FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) conference. I know our entire university community is looking forward to our future in the WAC as we move more to a national stage."

BobcatReport.com has had two of their guys reporting that sources have indicated Utah State is leaving the WAC... this one would be another big coup for them if accurate...

The interesting thing is that the BR.com guys have numerous different sources. And they are very well-placed. If they know/hear something... there may be smoke there, not necessarily fire per say...

From Ryan...

We have some unconfirmed sources that say Utah St. may be leaving the WAC. These are very early developments and unconfirmed at this point. Stay tuned to BR.COM for the latest...

From Jack...

Interesting. I talked to someone I know and respect that said the same thing. I will follow up in the morning.

MWC is the only destination that makes sense for USU.
The question is "why (back in March) were they about to be added, then suddenly unattractive ?"

There must be some forces that are driving the MWC schools to want to go to 12 and a CCG (if this is true).

Who would be football #12 ?
Would BYU come back (I would say no, I think they want to test independence, at least until the Big XII expands)
San Jose State (they were rumored to be on the verge back in March, BSU would like to add a western team, so BSU could play in the estern division)
Idaho (who would be advocating them ?)
UTEP decent geographical fit, would jump if they thought that MWC was becoming BCS AQ conference.

I give up... wouldn't be surprised if, in the end, this turns out to be just another internet rumor.
If MWC grabs 2 more WAC FB schools, Kurt Benson may just "end it all".

I would have to think that the MWC is waiting on any other moves. USU doesn't bring any value.

Throw me a parachute also!!!!

But seriously, this is really weird. Why now and not before? What changed? And above all, who is number 12? Maybe they've got a Texas school willing to leave already and they don't have to wait for Houston to figure out what's going on (or maybe Houston already knows it's getting the invite?).

Hopefully things become more clear soon.

BR.com is reporting that this information about USU is 'harmless' and that it stems from conference involvement in Air Force Academy and Utah State scheduling for football...

Oh well... alarms silenced for now! ;)

Once again, Utah St to join the MWC in 15 days (after WAC media days), per Bobcat Report's twitter...

Or is this the same rumor being picked up again, and the person who started this isn't aware tht it may just be related to scheduling Air Force (see above) ???

USU would put the MWC to 10 schools + Hawai'i for FB only....
Would FB go to a 10-game round-robin ? Maybe that's a good thing, since a lot of schools are paying "huge $$$" for OOC games lately.
